Whirlpool Duet GHW9400P Front Load Washer Review
When the first Whirlpool Duet washer was introduced back in December, 2001, it took the public by surprise. On one hand its modern design and front load style was a big plus, on the other hand though, the set retail price came as somewhat of a shock to a lot of people -
$1,200 and up for some of the models. After the initial shock began to wear off and people got used to the idea of paying $2,000 for a laundry set, the new Duet washer proved to be a solid, quality machine and a big success with the public.
As with most front load washers, there is the occasional problem with the “bellow” - the rubber boot between the front of the washer and the tub. But, with proper maintenance this problem can be overted. *UPDATE* There is a new product on the market called Affresh. It prevents odor causing residue, works much better than bleach and keeps your HE washer clean. See product details and purchasing info here. Download a Use and Care manual for your washer for instructions.
Every washer model, good or bad, has a list of components that fail most often. It doesn’t mean that your washer will break down tomorrow and statistically it probably won’t break down for a long long time. But if or when it does break down, chances are the faulty part will be on the list below.
THE LIST (or “What’s causing my Duet washer’s headache”)
- Well, we’ve mentioned the bellow, which you may have to replace once every few years.
- Water drain pump - might get clogged. Simple and inexpensive repair.
- Inlet water valve. What is a valve? A plastic body and a couple of solenoids. Solenoids go bad after a while, it’s that simple.
- Door lock. Somewhat of a fragile item and can break if not careful.
- Electronics - main control board, speed control, etc. With electronics, you never really know. It may fry tomorrow or last for 20 years. A good precaution is to use a surge protector for the washing machine.
- All above are what is called “functional items”. There are also cosmetical items that usually break due to improper or heavy use. Items like door handles, door frames, control knobs, door hinges, etc.
- Whirlpool Duet Parts List
All in all, Whirlpool Duet is a good quality washing machine. Quiet operation, high capacity, lots of options, powerful motor. If it does break down, make sure to use high quality original Whirlpool parts.

I want a manual to the first whirlpool duet washer that came out. I have lost my manual and need another one for understanding of different codes.

Charlena, visit our Appliance Manuals section (http://www.appliancejournal.com/appliance-manuals), click on Whirlpool and enter your washer model number to download the Use and Care manual for your Duet washer.

Bought the washer 20 months ago to rave reviews by consumer reports. It comes with a 1 year warranty. 8 months after the warranty we have the F6 error where the Motor Control Unit does not communicate with the motor tachometer which prevents the unit from completing a full cycle. We should have purchased an extended warranty! *sigh*. Anyhow, the repair, would be $223.18 for the MCU and $147 in labor for a total of $370!!!! half the price of the unit.
It’s a crime.
Washer works great when it works … *sigh*
Looking into buying the part myself and trying to install it ($150 for the part over the internet)

bought the washer/dryer 3 years ago. never had problems….do about 6-8 loads per week. have small odor problem but when I started leaving door open, odor “almost” went away. going to start using affresh tablets after a lot of research, and using vinegar as fabric softener, also going to switch to powdered HE detergent instead of liquid. but never had machine eat my clothes or other mechanical problems. bought GE for the last 20 years and always liked their service…..maybe I’m lucky seeing what others have written!

I have a duet frontload washing machine. The door is locked and I can’t remember how to unlock it. I seem to remember it happening once before and it unlocked when I pushed a series of buttons at the same time. Does anyone know which buttons I need to push?
Thanks!! Cindy

Hi! I’d love to get JLEE’s contact info.
We have the same issue.
Tried buying the MCU from an online vendor but after 3 shipments, the part is not correct. Later we found that it’s not the store’s fault but Whirlpool’s. The part listed online is not what’s in the box at the warehouse. It seems like WP made a huge mistake. We’re waiting for Sears to give us our MCU but we believe it’ll still be the wrong one. We looked it up online, on Sear’s parts website, and the MCU box/item number is the same as what we’ve been getting.
I looked at JLEE’s site but it’s a company site. So if I can either get JLEE’s email or if you forward mine to JLEE that’d be so so great. I just want to know if he/she fixed the issue and where the part was from.
Thanks!!!

I have a duet frontload washer. I moved last week, had a little accident with it and the window in the door broke. I bought it used, and don’t know what model it is, but it’s kind of old. Please let me know if you have an idea where I can buy it from.

I have a duet washer that is 2 years old and started to shake violently. Had a certified repairman out and the rear bearing is shot. I only run the washer 2-3 times per week. This seems to be common with this model after checking feedback on the web. $400 in parts and $200 in labor. Would not recommend this washer to anyone.
February 5th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Ditto all of these problems, and the front door leaks. Repair Co. has come out 4 times replacing parts, now it usually only leaks on the sanitary setting.
February 12th, 2009 at 11:57 am
For Cindy Wallwork: Pull off the front cover below the door (three screws). Reach up inside the corner under the door lock. You will feel a sort of rounded little item. You pull down on it and it unlocks the door, but you have other problems (electronic ones). Unplug it for awhile (ours takes a day). Plug it back and it should work.

I used my friend’s whirlpool duet washer in rinse and spin cycle for one cotton towel-type bath mat. At the end of the cycle it was still sopping wer. I thind that the front load type washers just don’t generate the centrifugal force necessary to do the job.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I have the Whirlpool Duet. During the “Sanitary” cycle, the seal ripped apart. It was replaced but everytime I use this cycle, the seal comes loose. I’m not sure if the seal was improperly set or there is another problem.

Purchased the Whirlpool Duet Wahser 07/08. By Sept. calling the service tech, shakes violently even when perfectly level. They have been out 8 times, replacing 2 parts, including the “bellow”. Still shakes violently. Cannot get Whirlpool to replace the product even though it’s under mfg. warrany. Have written letters to Whirlpool and made 50 phone calls. The service tech has told Whirlpool the washer is not repairable, they still refuse. Want him to install a “vibration kit”. As of March 2009 I am still fighting with Whirlpool as is the service company. I would not ever recommend a Whirlpool product to anyone. A company that cannot stand behind it’s warranty or product does not deserve my business. My next step is to file a complaint with BBB, possibly file a lawsuit and post a video on YouTube!

I’ve had this model for two years and love it. I do huge loads and small loads in it, never had any problems. After I’m done with washing I leave the door ajar till the next morning and I’ve never had a problem with odor or mildew. My water bills are dramatically down too, I can’t tell you how happy I am with this washer!
April 20th, 2009 at 2:56 am
My wife and I purchased a Whirlpool Duet Sport front end loader back in April of 07. The washer worked impressively up until today.
Machine gave a loud, rubbing kind of sound while in high spin cycle and now have water leaking out of machine all over basement floor.
Model number WFW8500SR00.
Do have some black stains on rubber seal at door since kids don’t leave it open after taking load out. Also learned that the slide in soap dispenser tray needs to be removed when not in use. Otherwise trapped water creates mold in this area as well.
Scared to hear what the repairman is going to say!
May 8th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
I’ve been told now that my rear bearing is out after having my Duet HT WFW8400T for two years…did EVERYTHING the manual and internet said for maintaining, cleaning, detergent, placement, the unit looks showroom floor new (as commented by my last repairman)…did not buy and extended warranty so am now screwed. My old washer I bought at a garage sale, it was 10 years old when I bought it, paid $50 and it lasted me 6 years before the timer went out and had the money for an “upgrade” so I bought the Duet. Some upgrade…no wonder the economy is in the crapper…companies can dish out crap appliances at a significant cost with what appears to be no consciousness of quality and product endurance for economic value.

Bought a whirlpool front load washer/dryer and am very disappointed w/it. If the door is closed tight and/or after washing a load of clothes is smells musty, when on rinse/spin cycle it is so…. Noisy, the valve stuck open when the machine was not in use but door was open to keep it from smelling and had water all over floor (was out of town over the wknd when this happened) and also have had to throw away clothes as they’ve had grease stains on them and you can’t get them out. For the price you have to pay for these, I would NOT encourage you to purchase one.
June 12th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
I cannot understand why the shaft that runs the impeller on pump that pumps out the water on my Duet frount loader washing machine was so cheaply made.It is made out of pot metal and broke. I had to get a repairman to replace the whole pump. A very cheaply made part for a washer that costs over $1000.
July 4th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Our Duet washer is dumping allot of water into the drum right at the end of the wash cycle (after the fast spinning). It is like it forgot what it is doing. Now the clothes are soaking wet when the cycle is done. We are hand wringing them out before throwing them into the dryer. The unit is 3.5 years old and this is the first real problem we have had with it. Sometimes socks get stuck behind the bellow and they reek to high heaven. If you close the door after washing, the next load is pretty musty. You have to leave the washer door open to let the inside of the machine dry out (if you are not going to immediately start another load). I wouldn’t buy one again.
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:15 am
Bought the duets and they are terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The washer stinks terribly and water just started gushing out the door all over the floor. It shakes my entire house……..
The dryer screen is cleaned in between every load and it still gets clogged at the exterior vent. This product is the worst ever, it plain out sucks.
Whirlpool doesn’t give a damn either. Their customer care department just kept rerouting me. I called the retailer and they sent me to a service contractor.
I then spoke with the Whirlpool manufacturers rep for the retailer and he told be I was out of luck. These are 3 years old that is crap to have this many problems.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:13 pm
15 repairmen, 3 New tubs, almost all the parts replaced and the tub which has lasted one month has to be replaced again. Back ordered part requiring me to go to the laudry mat for over 2 months. This Whirlpool Duet Washer is a piece of junk. Buyer Beware
July 25th, 2009 at 2:36 am
Whirlpool needs to be taught a lesson in customer service . A lesson such as Dave Carrol taught United Airlines when he posted a vieio on Youtube and sang :”UNITED BREAKS GUITARS”
July 28th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
We have a Whirlpool front end loader and want to know if anyone out there notices that there is not enough water being put in to really wash the load ? I mean we know it is energy efficient but it seems barely wet. Have looked at all possibiltities too.

Have the Whirlpool Duet steam washer. Loved it until F35 code came on. Washer is still under warranty. Called for warranty repair through whirlpool and they set up appointment for A&E Factory Service to come and repair. They said someone had to be available from 8A to 5P on day they were to come. Couldn’t give an approx time they could come look. The A&E man called at 3PM and said the problem was a pressure sensor he would order the part and have delivered to my house, when part came call and they would set up another appointment to have someone come fix. (The A&E man never even came and looked at washer) Called to make sure part was ordered and was told it was then 30 minutes later A&E called and said part was on back order wouldn’t be available until sometime in August. Been month now without washer and will be another month before it is fixed at the minimum. If you look on other websites this is an ongoing problem with these washers. Whirlpool needs to recall washers or make a replacement part that will work and is readily available.
August 1st, 2009 at 12:58 am
to donna…i had the same problem with my Whirlpool Duet Steam washer — F35. Unfortunately my warranty expired 3 weeks prior, so, instead of calling for repair I researched the problem myself by viewing different sites on the internet and came to the conclusion that the analog pressure sensor switch was bad. I searched practically every whirlpool parts store listed and none had the part in stock, all had to be backordered from the factory with a delivery date no sooner than August 9. Then, after waiting a few days I decided to try to search some more and was able to find ONE dealer in alabama who actually had the part in stock and shipped it out that same day and it arrived today (only 2 days later). My husband snapped the old part out and snapped the new one in and my washer is up and running again. I agree with you, this is an ongoing problem with these washers and Whirlpool needs to address this. I intend to sit down and write a letter to Whirlpool expressing how I feel. It’s bad enough that I’ve had this machine less than 13 months and it breaks down, but then I find out that absolutely no one keeps this part in stock and it will take 3-4 weeks to get it. I just got lucky finding one after a week of searching. Oh, and it literally took 5 minutes to replace. You wait 3-4 weeks for the part for a 5-minute repair.

ABOUT THE DUET:
If you are having problems with the door gasket (rubber seal) ripping or leaking because of a hole, PLEASE contact Whirlpool and file a complaint. I am trying to get a recall issued on this part since it seems that lots of people are replacing it (and it’s $115 + installation)
Whirlpool’s Number: 1.866.698.2538
You will need the MODEL and SERIAL numbers.
My Model # is GHW9150PW0
It was purchased at Sears in 2005

Does anyone have the exact part number for the pressure switch needed to fix the F35 error?
Thanks!!!
September 19th, 2009 at 1:15 am
My repairman had to factory order the board for the bad pressure switch and I am being charged over 500 dollars for just the part due to an f35 error code. Its outrageous! The washer is only 18 months old.
September 20th, 2009 at 2:36 am
My Duets are four years old. My washing machine flashes “F” and “H” and won’t complete the cycle. I have to cancel the cycle and start over with “Drain/Spin” to finish washing my clothes. I gave away an old matching 20-yr. old set which did a wonderful job but was ugly and not energy-efficient. Not only that, all the parts in the machines were stainless steel and metal working parts, not the crap plastic that these machines are made of. I wish I never would have given away my old ugly set. Can anyone tell me how to fix my problem ….maybe if I unplugged it for a day and plugged it in again??
September 20th, 2009 at 3:32 am
I will NEVER buy a whirlpool product again ever!!!! Errors, bearings blasting apart, we won’t even touch the noise issue. Garbage.
September 20th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
My advice to everyone is to go back to the old manual top loader type like we did. NO PROBLEMS. We got rid of out Duets and never regretted it a second. Crystal

I would like to thank all of you who have taken the time to post your issues with the Whirlpool washers. I’m in the market to buy a new washer and dryer, and because of all your feedback, I will not even consider Whirlpool. I also have a friend who has a Whirlpool that is fairly new and he is experiencing the same problems everyone else on this website is having. Crummy product and even crummier service. Thanks to all of you and good luck!

So….I have to say….I ABSOLUTELY and POSITIVELY HATE my whirlpool duet washer and dryer. I had wonderful OLD GE set and was convinced to get the Duets. Not only do I have a constant massive mold issue even though I do the monthly maintenance…but I have noticed tiny holes in a lot of shirts. SOme of them relatively new and I NEVER and I repeat NEVER got holes in shirts from my other machines. I have even purchased the tablets that WHirlpool told me to to get rid of the mold and SHOCKER…it didn’t work!! Needless to say…I am not very happy with my machines:-)

Whirlpool Duet Washer, 17 months, stops, displays S 70 or S71 code. washer has to be set to spin, drain per manual to complete wash? anybody had this problem or fix?

Whirlpool Duet Washer, wont spin out, stops and displays S70 or S71 code?
November 9th, 2009 at 5:19 am
One more bad thing about the Duet (and some other brand front-loaders): there is a design flaw whereby disimilar metals betwen the the tub and its support arms causes galvanic corrosion to take place and the support arms literally disintegrate. This causes the tub to wobble and eventually separate from the support. It took 6 years until my machine self destructed. The tub is guaranteed for lifetime, but this is a major repair requiring complete teardown of machine, and labor is not included. I’ve had similar problems as above. For the price of repair i think I may buy a new top load machine.

Thanks for saving me from buying a piece of feces machine, I will look into other brands, any good recomendations?
Thanks

We purchased the Duet just three months ago. To anyone out there who hasn’t made the purchase yet, you are a very lucky individual to have found this site. The overwhelming negative comments posted here are NOT an exaggeration by any means. Unless you want to bring a horrendous stink into your home, don’t mind leaving your home during spin cycles, and love playing the untwist the clothes game on a regular basis…. then the duet is not your bag. To those of you who regret your duet purchase, apparently you’re not alone.

Ryan….the part # is W10156252…this is the Analog Pressure Switch that could be causing the F35 error..( usually causes a Sud error as well)….good luck ):

I recommend for future purchasers not to buy the whirlpol Duet 9400. I have the same issues as other comments above. Now I have an F 32 code issue and what I understand from research, it could be many things. I sold my old washers because of the hype of the DUETS. So much for water and energy conservation when I have to spend so much on repair.
November 26th, 2009 at 3:10 am
Takes forever to “balance” out and spin at the end of the cycle. Very temperamental about getting up to speed. It will try and try to spin at least 5 or 6 times, stopping to juggle the clothes and begin to spin again. Pain in the ass takes forever to finish the cycle.
November 30th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
STONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU CONSIDER OTHER WASHERS!
Our unit is exactly two years old. After one week, the electronic panels went out. No power surge, just up and died. Whirlpool repaired the machine and we put it on a surge protector to be safe. Two weeks later, same problem. Lowe’s replaced the machine.
A year after the machine was replaced, we had more problems with the electrical panels. Whirlpool refused to fix it. So, I put up a big stink with the Ohio Atty. General. Only then did Whirlpool fix it. Cost was $1200 (nearly $250 more than a new model).
Here we are one year after that repair and now we are getting F35 codes. More repairs. I am seriously thinking about a class action lawsuit.
Also, a heads-up: This machine twists and rips our clothes - especially our sheets.
December 3rd, 2009 at 2:45 am
As a follow up to my Nov 9, 2009 post: I found a repair manual online and disassembled my machine. It is fairly straight forward following the procedure, and the machine is easily servicable, but then again I am an engineer. I was able to get an authorized whirlpool repairman to come and verify the defective part, the basket, which is lifetime guaranteed, and also the outer tub which was damaged and has a 10 year warranty. Called whirlpool and they will honor the warrantee. The basket arrived at my home today, hopefully the outer tub will come. So for $90 service call and a couple hours work I will be able to get my machine up and running again for a few more years myself. The repair service told me they would not even attempt to do this repair as practically the whole machine needs to be torn down. And now that I see where the musty smell comes from I can take care of that too.
December 5th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
Hey rob where is the smell coming from.
Not even a year I have had the Whirlpool duet, and from all the research I’ve been doing sounds like the water pump is gone, it is not putting any water into it and I was wondering where all the little holes in my shirts were coming from. VERY DISAPPOINTED.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
For Rob,
What type of sound was you machine making before you repaired it. My Duet washer makes an awful clunking and rubbing sound during the extraction an dspin cycles. The sound is most pronounced as the tub begins to start spinning, then fades out and returns throughout the cycle. Reading your replies and others makes me think I have a similar problem.
Also, where did you find the repair manual online?
Thank you.

My Whirlpool Duet has sucked since day 1. Where do I start should it be with the awful noise and vibration, which ended up causing the plastic piece around the tub just under the bellow; to break leading to the bellow getting two significant slits in it so that I could have water leaking out into my floor(repair cost right at 400.00). Or maybe I should warn u about the vibration being so bad that it has busted 2 control knobs(18.59 + tax.[x2]..) and made a 4″ crack along the control panel(haven’t repaired)…then there is always the thrill of finding your pants/jeans tangled into oblivion or your new clothes coming fresh out of the first wash to have holes and look like they are ancient and worn out, not to mention the panties, socks, and tanks that end up missing in action.(the machine was totally disassembled and only one sock was found in it, so where did they go Whirlpool???)… oh wait I forgot the odor, I’m talking odor that smells worse than raw sewage…all this wrapped into a nice neat little Whirlpool bundle(cost 1100.00+) that they refuse to service or acknowledge any fault on their part. Well Whirlpool at least one thing was free your total disregard for the consumers that keep your @ss making money and your lack of customer service.
January 23rd, 2010 at 9:39 pm
R’sky: the musty smell comes from the fact that there is always water trapped in the drain pump at the bottom of the tub (it is designed this way) and if you close the door then there is always humidity inside the machine, and mold will grow. Once there is mold, if you don’t empty a load promptly, it will get into the clothes. The rubber seal around the door is also a good moisture trap. What I did was give the seal a good cleaning with a toothbrush and Clorox (I had removed it from the machine) Now I try to empty the clothes as soon as possible, and the best thing is to leave the door open when not in use. I plan to once in a while run some Clorox or vinegar through to clean it out. As for holes in my clothes I never had that problem. I also run smaller loads now.
January 23rd, 2010 at 9:57 pm
Darryl - sounds like you have the same problem I did, and if you’ve been using your machine it has probably destroyed itself by now. If not, and you want to repair it, stop using the washer now. You can find a manual at Fixitnow.com / ApplianceGuru.com. (you may have to dig around for it, the manual I found was for a Duet Sport washer) I also had to replace the drain pump because it was ruined after chunks of plastic from the tub went through it. I use Repairclinic.com for parts. Good Luck

Whirlpool duet Front loader- The worst purchase I’ve ever made. Bought 3 years ago, shakes all over the place during spin cycle and consistently displays F11 and Dl codes. From what I have read, I am not alone. This washer is a lemon and I would encourage everyone to tell anyone they know not to buy a Whirlpool. Maybe they will go out of business and think again about taking advantage of the consumer.

Wife and I purchased our DUET set in the fall of 2002. We raised 2 teenagers with this set, washing 4 or 8 loads of laundry a week, for more than 7 years. Excellent washer and drier; the best we have ever owned. We have started to get the “FH” error code. I went to ‘repairclinic.com’ and ordered the repair manual. The unit passes all diagnostics tests. I suspect that either the pressure switch or an electrical connect to be the problem.
March 8th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
We bought the Whirlpool Duet 4 1/2 years ago and I can vouch for the fact that ALL of these negative comments above are 100% true.
Here are the issues we had with out $1,100 washer (one of the most expensive at the time):
1) Door handle broke off after 5 months of use. Not under warrenty, spent $40.00 on a new one. That one broke 4-5 months later. They have 2 screws that keep it in place that ends up creating a huge pressure point and snapping it. Last 3 years we have had to slide our fingers between door and unit and open that way (slightly painful)
2) Selector knob broke off after about a year. Like the handle I went and ordered a new one. $30.00 and about 6 months later that one broke. You put a lot of pressure on a thin plastic peice to turn your knob. Now wife uses a sock to ‘pinch’ the rod to select her wash cycle. Again, kind of hard to do but she got by.
3) SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE / BANG BANG BANG / WALK WALK WALK - that is the normal cycle. we have balanced the machine ourselves, paid TWICE to have someone else come do it, doesn’t matter. Also on a second floor so we put huge support boards in basement below, $30.00 of lumber. Did nothing. Machine literally walks about 2-3 feet per wash, needs pushed back into place after each cycle. My wife is not strong enough to do this (machine weights a lot) so she can ony do one load unless I am around. wow, this is a huge inconvience. I went on a business trip once for 4 days and she had to have the neighbor come over 3 times to move machine back
5) RIPPED CLOTHES - we have lost NUMEROUS articles of clothing due to small tears and rips
4) FINALLY the bellows rubber peice cracked after 4 years. would of been $300.00 to fix. that was the last straw. I sealed it with rubber and rubber cement but could only do cold cycles for about 3-4 months. finally dumped the machine.
total impact:
3 + years of painful washing (no knobs, door handles)
$ 420.00 estimated payments to fix machine (knobs, door handles, balancing) and that is WITHOUT paying to fix ripped bellows
~$300.00 of lost clothing. one example - bought my wife a sweatshirt she had wanted for 2-3 years, $60.00 Champion from her college - ripped the 2nd time we washed it. $60.00 and special Christmas gift down the drain
Run away from ANYTHING Whirlpool in regards to washers. Even if they fixed some of the outside issues on newer models I have zero faith any of the interior issues were taken care of.
Go LG or Kenmore IMO

What do you do when the door gasket comes loose and the wire falls out?
My last gasket shredded and it was under warranty, but hiring someone to do this is ridiculous when the unit is 2 years old.
I will NEVER buy a unit like this again!

Bought my Duet HT set 4 months ago, the first washer was severely damaged somewhere between manufacture and transit to dealer as upon arrival to our home, it wouldnt work and upon my further investigation, the concrete vibration dampeners were heavily damaged along with the mount to the water pump.
Upon receiving a new washer, we had 3 months of reasonable performance now followed by consistently not fully spinning out laundry at the final spin cycle, leaving clothes soaking wet. Whirlpool authorized repairman has assessed machine as “not having any error codes, so there is nothing to fix of remedy your concern”.
My dryer has also required the replacement of the door hinge as the door was popping open mid cycle leaving clothes wet.
I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHERS OR DRYERS!!
The customer service I have received has been very poor and the machines themselves create the impression that they are either engineered to sub standard levels or, are being assembled by substandard labour in a third world country, and Ive got my guess I know which is the more likely possibility

Will never buy a whirlpool duet washer and dryer again. Handle on washer has broke 3 times, the washer shakes the whole house when spinning, the rubber seal always gets mildew on it and under the seal it gets nasty. The dryer shuts off before the clothes are dry if you don’t use the timed setting. Whirlpool replaced the handle twice, but refuses to replace it again even though this has to be a defect in the handle and I see others have complained about it too.

Whirlpool drier just quit, started cycle 30 sec. later quit no power, no lights nothing checked breakers and plug for power just fine. ????? Thanks, Dave

what does F01 mean? I had a repairman come by, but he had no idea…just charged me $130. Needless to say the code showed up again…3 weeks later
June 25th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
This is for Jeanne, my washer has the same code of F01. After 4 hours of phone calls and online searches I have come up with this explanation, it is an electronics communication problem with the pump. I have been told to unplug washer for up to 24 hours, it seems that all of the electricity needs to drain from the washer before plugging back in. I don’t have alot of faith in this tactic so the seviceman is scheduled for tomorrow. It doesn’t hurt to try though, good luck.

What is the best HE detergent for front loading washers and are HE detergents really necessary?
July 3rd, 2010 at 4:53 am
I liked my Whirlpool Duet front load washer at first. It washes great and it is energy efficient. Now all I see is F11 and other error codes and it takes me hours to get a load of close done. One day it works fine the next is a different story. The funny thing is it started right after the warranty ran out. I have been looking online to see if anyone else has this problem and cannot believe how many people have the same issue. Wonder why Whirlpool does not recall these washers or correct the problem. I paid over $1000 on that washer and thought it would be better quality.
July 12th, 2010 at 12:21 am
We have had two duet front load washing machines in three months. The rubber boot on the first on detached completely and got twisted to the point that I had a three inch diameter opening out of which I pulled an entire, drenched load of laundry. A brand new shirt was ruined, having been twisted to the point of tearing in numerous places. God bless Menards, since they agreed to let us exchange this machine, which we had only owned for about five weeks. We got a new duet front load washing machine, identical to the other one. Within five weeks it too developed problems. I opened the door to discover a thick layer of rubbery dust all over the inside of the door, covering the rubber boot, and on a lot of the clothing. I also found a piece of the rubber boot that had been ripped off. A pair of athletic shorts was ripped in numerous places. I would never get a Whirlpool front load washer again. Yuck!! Again, thank you Menards who will give us full credit for a refund or exchange. I suggest that you go directly to your retailer if you experience problems. You will get absolutely nowhere with Whirlpool.
July 12th, 2010 at 3:39 pm
any idea what would cause water to leak into the machine when it is turned off?
July 13th, 2010 at 5:04 pm
Just had an authorized repair service leave me with a huge estimate (over $1500 … yes, more than I paid for the washer) to repair my less than two year old Duet 9400 (WFW9400SW01). He said bearings between the inner and outer tubs were failing and that both tubs needed to be replaced. The dryer has been great for the past 22 months … can not say the same for the washer.
July 18th, 2010 at 3:28 am
Have read all the posts. SOunds like our 5 year old Duet Washer has committed suicide. It started making a terrible rattling clunking noise during spin cycle and the tub does not appear to accellerate, it only moves very slowly. It did this once lase week and then it was ok. Now tonight is started again. No alarms, no other indications except this very loud rattling clunking noise. I had my wife shut it down immediately because it sounded like a bearing going bad. It this the infamous spin bearing symptom? As I am an engineer and have replaced transmissions in top loaders, where can I get the parts and the service manual, or is it more cost effective to buy a new one.
thanks

For what it is worth…
I have the WHIRLPOOL DUET GHW9400
when we first got it it worked great for about 6 months then we had the f6 error. long story short the wiring harness and controller and motor were replaced then not long after the bearings started to go out. Well the outside and inside drums and basket were replaced and now out of warranty. Well 6 month later bearings again! well a call to whirlpool support which was one more of soooo many before this to get anything done. they would never replace the unit!
so I called to get new bearings and a seal. well guess what you can not order them! its the next higher assembly at $400 for the rear drum. here is the good part since I had so many problems the tech offered me 10% on a new unit!
anyway I took the machine apart drove the bearings out and took them to a local bearing supply and got new sealed ones.
the part numbers are for NTN brand bearings:
rear: 6206LLBC3/5K
front: 6307LLBC3/L627

I’ve had my Duet for over 4 years now. Only problem I had was a small pencil caught in the pump - found instructions on how to drain the machine, pull the pump impeller and fix the problem on line. Now I make sure I check ALL my son’s pockets.
I have not had a single problem. Maybe I’m lucky, or maybe the people without issues don’t post. Save a lot of money on my water bills and my clothes are significantly cleaner than my old kenmore top loader. The delicate cycle works great for silk and fine garments. No more handwashing or dry cleaning for me.
It rocks a bit when it spins, but we have done our best to level it on the concrete basement floor. The clothes/towels are much dryer when you remove them than the toploader, and the drying cycle is usually faster than the wash cycle.
I always leave the door open and dry off the rubber bellows when I finish laundry, never have had a problem with mold or odor (the owner’s manual tells you to do this.
Just a different perspective.
July 21st, 2010 at 10:01 pm
Well, here is the lates status on our DUET. It is running fine.
I downloaded the service documentation from one of the sites and proceeded to pull off the covers to see if I really needed the spin bearing, etc. I performed the checks to see if the bearing was worn or loose, Nope! no play in it. Checked by lifting up on the spin basket to see if it had play up and down - none. This was good since the rear tub with bearing is $417.00 and the spin basket is around the same. Anyway, I found 2 things wrong. The rear cover had been dented in when it was installed and the rear pulley and sharft was hitting the cover and clunking. I banged out the dent. I also found the the rear gas shocks and the suspension springs seem to be worn out causing the basket and tub to tilt backwards and down adding to the no clearance problem with the rear cover. I moved the springs to the rear position on the drum and this helped to tilt it level again. I alos found 3 socks that had gotten in the drain in the botton under the rubber bellows. I theen cleaned the filter in front down below in front of the pump. She is quiet and running like a song. I will order and replace the gas shocks and the springs as Preventive maintenance.

NOT ENOUGH WATER! Is it possible to “increase” the water flow into the Duet Washer? How do I open the lid to do this? My clothes flop around but do not get clean. There is simply not enough water inside to clean anything. Is there a water fill valve that I can adjust to allow more water into the Duet washer?
August 1st, 2010 at 7:35 pm
whirlpool duet washer is awful becuase of the mold problem and shaking problem I believe there is a class action suit against whirlpool for the mold problem. Mold can kill you. We need to all stand up for our rights refunds and more
August 1st, 2010 at 8:17 pm
Regarding the class action suit. we live in Indiana and my wife tried to file and was told the class action suit was not in Indiana only in Ohio. I thought class action suits were across all states

I have a whirlpool Duet and have had the CCU replaced because of F70 and now it is doing it again. How can this thing be so energy eff. when it cost 500+ in cost every time it is repaired. My washer is only three years old. I am junking and buying an LG. I have the dryer and yet to have a single problem with it. Stay away from this junk called Whirlpool cause it sucks the money out of you. I still have the old part for the whirlpool and took it to someone and he put it in a different washer and it worked. i w think these are better off in the trash.
August 10th, 2010 at 1:55 am
Robert,
Please do yourself another favor and do not buy LG. I dont want to get off subject here, but we bought an LG refrigerator and have nothing but trouble with it. When delivered, one of the barn door’s hinges got bent. It took 4 months and countless wrong parts from Korea and wrong repairmen who knew nothing of the LG product. I finally told them to send me the hinge and I would put it on. No luck, they said it would void the warranty… HaHaHa, time did that. The ice maker is a piece of junk. It either jams ad doesnt make ice or it never stops and then jams with ice. The crisper bins freeze meat and vegetables alike, no matter how warm you set the frige. I want to ship this piece of crap back to Korea. Recommendations are Bosch or Samsung Best products on the market.

Hi,
I have the Whirlpool front loader duet. My experience has been terrible. I think you should be told of the problems you have with then IE
Black growth (probably STAPH) mold and mildew smell . Two gasket replacements on the washer and it is leaking again. The clothes stink after washing . Since buying and using the washer I have developed a fungus on my skin and I believe it is from the washer.

Could you explain why you need a service person to take the dryer apart to clean out the lint every 4 to 6 mo. or less according to use?
I have always cleaned the lint container out in the dryer and that was sufficient.
I smelled smoke and called some one to check it out and was told you were to do this. I could not believe the lint in the container under the lint container and lint was up to the tub of the dryer. Why would you make some thing so complicated and no instructions ABOUT A POSSIBLE FIRE?
August 29th, 2010 at 12:59 am
My Duet has been leaking in my brand new house for the past months and now after reading all this I have some ideas as to where to start tomorrow. The damage it has done is crazy, leaked through the floor down to the basement that I just finished off. So now I have to repair all the way through the floor to the ceiling and everything in there!!!!!!!!!! Not happy at all and now I will never buy another Whirlpool myself after hearing how horrible their service is!!
September 1st, 2010 at 1:50 pm
I cannot believe I just read that line of your article that says “all in all, Whirlpool Duet is a good washing maching.” It is the worst machine I have ever owned! It smells, it is loud and no service person can fix it! I following all the regular maintenance care of bleach once a month, leave door open, etc. I don’t leave clothes sitting in the maching either. No where does it say that water may be retained in the pump. Last fall I took the bottom panel off and found the pump when trying to track down why the machine is so loud. I opened the drain at that time and some water drained out. I did it again b/c I have a smell that I can’t get rid of and have bleached, used Affresh, tried EVERYTHING I can think of. About 2 cups of the most foul smelling water drained out and now after reading on-line posts I will be removing the hoses to clean them out. Yes, I am a woman on a mission!! This is ridiculous and these machines should be recalled.

We have had our Duet washer & dryer for over 5 years now. For about 4 1/2 years, all was well. Then, one day during the spin cycle the drum shook so violently we knew something was wrong. Like Rob mentioned in his earlier post, the arm that holds the drum in place had snapped, requiring the drum to be replaced. Fortunately, the drum was covered under warranty - unfortunately the labor wasn’t, and the part was on backorder for 3 weeks. We have also had the issue with the moldy smell - we bought a product called Smelly Washer (no joke - http://www.smellywasher.com) which helped, but ultimately the only way to completely keep it from coming back was to leave the door open. We have also had the excessive lint issue in the dryer - while the repair guy was here fixing our washer he took a look at the dryer, since we noticed it’s performance was deteriorating. I couldn’t believe the lint he pulled out of that machine, especially considering how diligent I have been about ALWAYS cleaning the lint tray before each use. Overall, I wouldn’t buy a Whirlpool again - even thought we’ve been reasonably fortunate in terms of major issues, reading these comments is not reassuring me about the long term life of these very expensive products.
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:01 pm
I have had my Duet set 4 years in October. I will never again buy a front loader. I loved the look of it, but, it has done nothing but smell up my house. I keep the door open, wipe the bellows dry after each use, and run the monthly bleach cycle. All to no avail, I still have mold!!!
Also, I am on my third door handle. This is clearly a design flaw. I have lodged a complaint with Whirlpool, and you can tell they really don’t care. They did give me 50% off on a new door handle, but, no discount on shipping…. $6.95 to ship a part that weighs about 6 ounces. I will not be buying another Whirlpool appliance, nor a front loader washing machine.
Furthermore, I don’t think it cleans my clothes as well as a top loader. My lights are dingy after just one washing.
September 10th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Had our whirlpool front load for 1 year, had to have the inside and outside drum and bearing replaced already. Had a Maytag top load washer for 20 some years not a problem, got new washer for enviromental reasons and save energy and water at the same time, big mistake, I want our Maytag back.
September 11th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
Don’t buy a Whirlpool Duet Front Load Washer. Paid $1,135 for ours less than 2 years ago and it started vibrating on the high speed spin cycle and then it wouldn’t spin any more. Took it apart this morning and front bearing is gone. Water leaked into it and ruined it. Of course you can’t replace the $10 bearing, but have to replace the whole rear tub assembly for $520. Be warned. This is a very poor design and will cost you a lot of money. Will not buy again. It’s only a matter of time and it will happen again based on the design. If I fix it, it will have cost me $825/year to have the priveledge of owning a Whirlpool. No thanks!

We had problems with this washer rocking and walking. We solved this by (1) having a sturdy floor, and (2) putting some dampening at the TOP of the washer. Our washer and our dryer are right next to each other, about and inch to an inch and a half apart. I took one of those grey pipe insulators you can put on copper water pipes (1/2″ or 3/4″) and wedged it between the washer and the dryer, right at the top, from front to back. This material is resilient but squishy, so it absorbs enough of the energy from the washer to keep it from rocking or walking. The dryer vibrates a bit, but not too much, and the problem is solved. You don’t want to put anything in between that is too solid, or the vibration will transmit directly to the dryer. Make sure the pipe insulation is snug. You can pick it up at any home improvement store.
Our washer has the stinks, too. We found that there is a secret filter (not mentioned in our manual) that you’ll find by taking off the front panel. Right up front, in the center, you’ll see it: it’s plastic, and ours is grey. It has a handle on it that you can screw off. Don’t open it until you’ve detached it from the machine (one screw, at the bottom, front), or the contents will make a mess inside/under the machine. Once you open it up, stinky water will come out. Clean it out and things will get better. We use this to drain the washer when we will not be around for a while, too.

Well my whirlpool duet is now 6 years old am I am needing to replace the rubber boot/”bellow” for the 4th time!!! Seems a bit ridiculous for an $1100 dollar machine. Every time it rips water leaks out into the floor and this time it leaked through the floor and soaked the ceiling below. My door handle also broke right away so I have to reach my fingers in to open the door. The odor is bad. One more thing. We bought this “Duet” just before I had twins, our 3rd and 4th children. When I retuned to work after maternity leave I went and bought $300 worth of new clothes. When washing for the first time my brand new clothes came out ripped to pieces with black marks/stains on them. Was a complete shocking mystery. Had repairman come out and was told this had never been known to happen before. Wow!!! By reading here this has been a frequent occurrence. Unbelievable and very unacceptable!!! Seems whirlpool needs to be recalling their product. I’m wondering how they are avoiding this unless not enough have filed a formal complaint with whirlpool and were satisfied after ventiing here.
September 20th, 2010 at 2:00 am
These washers have another problem. My 7 year old Kenmore HE3 (made by Whirlpool “Duet”) was making the infamous banging sounds. Turned out the bearing and tub were fine. It was the bracket (spider) that holds the inner basket to the shaft which passes through the bearings. Two of the three arms were cracked! Research on the internet says that this is a common problem because it is made of cast aluminum and corrodes easily in water and detergent. Some have reported the spider falling completely apart. Mine has chunks missing! It is over $400 to replace the stainless steel basket (spider does not come separately) so not worth it to replace since the bearings would probably go next anyway.
And for those that only have the bearing problem, the bearings can be replaced without replacing the whole outer tub. This guy sells a kit with 2 bearings and seal:
http://www.elitebearing.com/index.html
Will also work on the Whirlpool Duet since they are the same.
September 25th, 2010 at 2:23 am
Randall or someone: Has anyone ordered bearings from elitebearing.com? I’m wondering if the person offering this kit is reputable. Thanks.
September 25th, 2010 at 4:40 am
Spencer: I haven’t but he also sells bearings for Maytags and has created a tool to replace those bearings. During my research, found the following part numbers for NTN brand bearings:
rear: 6206LLBC3/5K
front: 6307LLBC3/L627
Nothing found for the seal though.
Anyway, he’s not charging a lot for the parts and could be worth the try if your basket/spider are still in good condition.
September 25th, 2010 at 11:40 am
Thanks for the reply Randall. I’ve emailed him a few questions, so well see what kind of vibe I get from that interaction…
September 30th, 2010 at 5:00 am
Just picked up this washer. It apparently was only used a few times but shakes violently! My neighbors definitely hate me. The Dryer definitely wont stay on top. I hope i can find a solution to it because its mine now.
September 30th, 2010 at 11:04 pm
I have had a duet washer for 3 years. It started taking longer to wash, then got F02 error. If you take off the front bottom panel there is a resivoir that catches lint and other items from going into the drain tube. Just turn the knob and clean it out. Make sure you have towels underneath before opening.
October 19th, 2010 at 1:41 am
Intermittent F6 error. I have been trying to chase an Intermittent F6 error for the past month. The cause can be either the wire harness, the MCU or the motor? Does anyone have any idea how to narrow it down further? I have the Tech info book but it is limited in information.
Thx

I purchased my whirlpool washer n dryer Feb. 08, purchased an extended warrnty to. All I have had is trouble with this machine. All of these F-30 F-28 pops up, and i called whirlpool to find out what the error ment all they could say was that I need a repairman to come out. Ive had so many A n E repairmen come out and fix the same thing. You set the appoinment, then wait for your part to come in the mail, then have to let them know that the part has arrived. They come out call themselves repairing the problem, and as soon as they are gone the error pops up again. Yes i do have a warranty, Im having problems now just trying to get the appt. this is so crazy. Everyone need to come together get a lawyer this piece of crap they have sold us. I have lost so many clothes from the washer door locking, and waiting for the repairman tojust unlock the door, and whirlpool said tome that they are not responsible for my clothes being replace. SICK N TIRED OF EVEN DEALING WITH THIS ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 13th, 2010 at 5:28 am
I ordered, received, and installed tub bearings and a main seal from elitebearing.com. He sent exactly what I needed for the job and though it was somewhat of a pain to do, the fix went well and we now have a like-new quiet washer again. The bearings that he sells are sealed, but I’m not holding my breath that they last longer than a few years. I hoping that they do, but…
Just wanted to report back.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
I have a whirlpool duet washer that has water pouring out of the bottom. Does anyone have information about what the problem could be?
November 16th, 2010 at 3:00 am
Linda, the problem is you have a leak. Without knowing how much or when in the cycle it is leaking, your best bet is to remove the lower front panel to get a better look at where it might be coming from. You will see right away if one of the tubes attached to the pump is leaking. If it is from the filler you will see water dripping from up higher. good luck.
November 24th, 2010 at 3:28 am
This is in response to the comment made by Terry Doffe on February 15th, 2009 at 5:17 pm. The front load washers spin much much faster than top loads. Terry’s comment was made in ignorance. The washer rotates slowly at first to see if the load is balanced. If it is, then it spins on up to whatever speed you have it set for. If it isn’t, then it doesn’t spin up. An unbalanced load spinning at top speed could cause serious damage to the washer. My wife complained about the same problem (not spinning the water out of a bath rug and toilet seat cover she had put in there by themselves) so I looked in the troubleshooting section of the manual and found some helpful info on this scenario. I took the sopping wet bath rug and toilet seat cover out and put some clothes in there out of the dirty clothes, set it for drain and spin and it worked fine. For those of you complaining about vibration when the washer spins…Try leveling the machine (close is not good enough, it must be exactly level) as the installation instructions direct and your problem will in all likelyhood improve greatly. If you want one that is quiet as a mouse when it spins up, you will have to spend more money than you did on the Whirlpool.
November 24th, 2010 at 3:45 am
To Lisa from September 19th, 2010 at 2:02 pm in reference to water leaking from the washer and damaging the downstairs ceiling. If you are going to have a washing machine upstairs it is wise to put a drain pan underneath it (same goes for a water heater upstairs or in the attic). They can be purchased from Lowes or Home Depot. Our washer and dryer are on the second floor and our home has a drain line in the floor so any water that leaks into the drain pan can make it’s way to the outside. We have had the Duet washer for 3 years with no gasket issue.
November 24th, 2010 at 4:21 am
Well, Here is the newest update on the POS Duet washer. Now the bearings are starting to make noise when it is spinning up to high speed. So badly, we have to close the door to the laundry room to carry on a conversation, and yes Mister Smart, our machine is level because there is a level on the front of it. I read the book too. I don’t think you should have to pay more than $1200.00 to have a quiet washing machine. Afterall, it was quiet when it was new. Now it is only 3 years old. Looks like a teardown and bearing replacement is in my future. I cant afford to buy a new one every 3 years. Thanks Whirlpool for your quality products.
December 1st, 2010 at 8:03 pm
HATE these Whirlpool Duet HT washer and dryer. Ripping my clothes to shreds…of course it is out of warranty…just at 2 years old! Customer sevice is TERRIBLE will NEVER NEVER NEVER buy another Whirlpool. Would rather wash my clothes on a laundry board. Heading over to Kenmore who is now made by LG but about 200 cheaper per unit and buying warranty this time!!!! Just blew 2000 dollars. Thank you Whirlpool!
December 1st, 2010 at 11:04 pm
Kevin - My comment on leveling wasn’t pointed at those of you having vibration problems due to mechanical failure (such as bad bearings).
December 5th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
My clothes come out of the Duet front loader all tied up in knots and twisted together. Never before have I had to iron permapress shirts, jeans, wash and wear pants, sweaters!, etc. What an awful machine this is!! Run away, do not buy it!!
December 5th, 2010 at 11:22 pm
I to am a victim to the Whirlpool Duet. We keep getting the F11 code and when I checked on the internet for repair solutions, they were all fairly expensive. I also learned that this is a common complaint with this machine. My last washing machine was a different brand and it lasted 20 years without ever having a problem. My refrigerator is also a whirlpool and recently something in the back shorted out. Cost $150.00 to repair and repairman said it could of burned the house down. Both of these items are fairly new and in my opinion cost too much money to be having these kinds of issues. Won’t be buying anything else Whirlpool every again.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
Had Duet less than 2 years, just me and my wife and split time between our primary residence and a vacation home. This washer gets very light use. The analog pressure switch is broken now. Tiny little insignificant part costs over $200 to repair. My 2 cents based on my experience and other postings… do not buy this washer. It looks pretty but it is not well made.

For those of you suffering from foul smells coming from your washer which you cannot seem to get rid of you may be interested in the following two websites which detail class action suites against Whirlpool because of smells.
The first, http://www.whirlpoolclassaction.ca/ is in Canada, and the second, http://www.lieffcabraser.com/cases.php?CaseID=126 is in the USA

i’ve joined the F70 & F71 error code club with my duet washer - and yes, A&E just gave me the $830 news to replace both interface boards - the tech didn’t even do a continuity test, check the wiring harness or even run the test program that is in the ’secret’ yellow tech literature in the bottom of the machine. so he must know there’s a flaw in the interface board parts or just didn’t care to do a wiring check because he had to be at his next stop within 30 minutes as he promised the caller on his cell phone. diagnostic test showed a code for the door mechanism and then went to the 70, 71 codes…the door lock may be the issue or it could even be a loose wire or i could pay $830 for the two parts that are only guaranteed for 90 days…oh sure, after reading all the posts on these duets i’m going to pay $830 for another 90 days of hell

My Whirlpieceofshxx (Duet: Model #WFW9600T is only 2 years old and is now intermittently displaying the dreaded F35 code (of course out of warranty…of course!). So, I searched online, as well as confirmed with several of the blogs in this forum that the analog pressure sensor had to be replaced…ordered it tonight ($56.00 + 6.00 shipping) and will attempt to do the switch myself…I called Whirlpieceofshxx and spoke to their lack of customer service rep. and she said to call a Certified Whirlpieceofshxx technician to check it out. I told her that there were tons of blogs regarding this F error, but she said that there weren’t any ongoing issues with the Duet regarding this error code. I proceeded to alert her that she was misinformed and again alerted her to the ton of blogs regarding the matter and her response became quite robotic and replied, “I suggest you make an appointment with a service technician.” When I asked her why the company doesn’t stand by its’ product and come clean about this issue by replacing the analog pressure sensors, she replied once again by saying, “I suggest you make an appointment with a service technician.” Disgusting customer lack of service by Whirlpieceofshxx! Stay away from Whirlpool…you will regret it if you don’t. They have lost a customer for life, and I will be passing along my disgust with them to friends, family and anyone else in the market for a washer. Down with Whirlpieceofshxx.

WHEN I CALLED A REPAIRMAN HE DIDN’T NEED TO KNOW THE F35 CODE WAS ON…I JUST SAID WHIRLPOOL DUET STEAMER, AND HE SAID PRESSURE SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I’ve had the washer for about 20 months. Avoid Whirlpool washers.

we bought whirlpool model ghw9100lw2 front load washer march of 2004. january 2011 the front tub needs to be replaced. just ate away from the front of machine. 4 hours to tear the machine apart, trying to repair ourselves, tub cost $180.00 this does not include shipping cost. $1000.00 machine one would think it would last more then 6 years. what a piece of crap, last minute always from day one took anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to finish.

Hi folks looks like i have joined the masses for the F06 error!!
here is my nightmare lol.. bought my ghw9400p whirlpool duet ht 2nd hand from appliance guy here in Port Hope trying to support the smaller business, $400 apparently it is worth far more than that…they sell for $1200 new, so I am told. I figured even if it was $800 new I was doing ok. Me thinks I was overcharged anyone wish to let me know would appreciate it more than you know. But that is a different issue.. Well nasty little machine worked fine for 2 months then started an irregular F06 error, here today gone tomorrow . Proprietor in question not good with large dogs so I loaded machine on my truck and took it to him.(also had to deliver it to myself in the first place)sucker is quite heavy let me tell you. Anyways, have to respect certain persons fears. Damned if that hunk of metal worked perfectly for him. He tested it half a dozen times, twice in front of me before I “delivered” it to myself again. So… let it sit to warm up etc. before I hooked it up again. You know, of course it would not work for me yet again, no matter what I did, level it,adjust drain hoses and more.. So now naturally, it is my fault, I did something to washer in transport. I think not. It is being delivered by me AGAIN to Ed White’s Appliances. He wants to exchange it for a Frigidaire, I would prefer my money back and do some research b4 i buy another washer. My free 2nd hand washer worked non-stop for 6 yrs. Any recommendations for my next purchase would be greatly appreciated!!! Furthermore, will never buy a Whirlpool product again.

Our Whirlpool duet front loader worked wonderful when we bought it, sounded like a 747 on takeoff when in spin cycle, but otherwise very quiet and no shakes.
But, now, just 4 years old, it started to sound like marbles rolling around inside. Had a repair man look it over, said it was a ‘bra wire’ impinging on the rotating drum and would cost a lot to fix. He said it would rust itself out. Showed us the lint trap underneath and emptied it out for us. $90 service call, plus sold my wife a $300 extended warranty.
He left, the sounds didn’t. Used it for the following month until last week (Jan 22,11) when it started leaking water. Took the lower front panel off and sure enough, water dripping out the bottom. Called them back, different service man came and said the drum is cracked, bellow needs replacing and something else in there. Good thing we got the extended warranty - though Sears/Whirlpool may not fix it and offer us a credit (not worth a new machine of course). The parts meanwhile are on order, and it will be at least 4 weeks until it can be repaired.
Never again with a Whirlpool appliance of any kind. PS: The matching dryer has been trouble free (knock on wood).

We purchased our Duet washing maching 2 1/2 years ago. It worked well until it started leaking. It ended up being the hose which pumps out the dirty water. We fixed it on our own (we had no warrantee) and it worked for a week. Then, it just stopped. We now have a load of clothes stuck in the machine because the door won’t open and the repairman is coming today. Best Buy and Whirlpool say basically “too bad” because you did not purchase the warrantee. So as a consumer, we should purchase warrantees on all products knowing they are going to break because all they make is a piece of crap anymore. (hint of sarcasm). I may end up replacing it and starting over, not buying another Whirlpool and not from Best Buy.
February 11th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
The rubber gasket in front has been building up mold, despite me wiping it down with a bleach mixture twice a week. Water and small bits of debris remain in the gasket’s center gap after each load.
Yesterday the gasket retaining wire came off during washing, and water poured all over the floor. With much difficulty, I stretched it back over the gasket, but it still leaks with every load.
Since purchasing this washer, I have developed contact dermatitis from my clothes. I always use HE detergent, half the recommended amount, in fact. From watching the entire cycle through the “window,” I’ve become convinced that this washer doesn’t thoroughly rinse the clothes. It merely sprinkles water on them. Now I run everything through a second rinse cycle. This helps, but hasn’t cured, the problem. And it wastes water, which was the whole point of buying a HE machine. Never again.

in reply to Branson: What is you point! You said many of words, but nothing about your issues with the Whirlpool duet washing machine. If you have a Duet and would like to comment, this is a forum for that topic. Otherwise… what?
March 12th, 2011 at 3:16 pm
Kevin,
Totally agree with you.
Additionally there are one or two others where the point, should there be one, with regards to Whirlpool, Duets, or Sears versions thereof, is somewhat, if not totally obscure, or non existant.

I would like to say if anyone is having a problem with their duet washer please, please let me know. I am trying to have the item recalled. This washer is completely defective! We purchased our set twenty months ago. It shakes violently and loudly! The manual states that the humming is normal. It got worse and worse until it became unbearable! Of course, it was after the warranty. After several phone call and emails Whirlpool has told me to go pound sand. The bearings and tub need to be replaced. This is unheard of! I was told by the repairman that bearings should last 20+ years and this is just one example why the machine is JUNK! I am hoping to get through to Whirlpool and would love the help/experiences of others. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!
April 2nd, 2011 at 12:38 am
WE have had several pieces of cloths ripped, or small puncture holes… is there something a repair man can do to fix this issue?
any suggestions???
April 2nd, 2011 at 12:54 am
I wish there was an answer…I have stopped buying any kind of tshirts that are more than a few bucks. All of my Ann Taylor shirts have tiny holes in them. We have holes in almost all of our shirts and mildew to go with it! Good Luck!!

I read with horror all the posts concerning the Whirlpool Duet front loaders. I felt like we were the only family to have experienced the same problems with a washer, until I started researching this AWFUL product. We, too, had a top loader that lasted us over 10 years until we had an urge to spend $$$ for the latest & greatest!! Well, after 4 1/2 years, a motherboard (under warranty), and a service tech’s opinion that the bearing & tub are shot…looks like we are shopping for a new washer. Big Question: Spencer’s post of purchasing & replacing a bearing/seal sounded quite promising. Anybody had any luck with this repair??? Although this is probably a reach and probably a bad idea, my service tech (who also sells used appliances) was all too eager to haul away my Duet when we have it replaced!!
April 14th, 2011 at 12:50 am
Nick,
The first thing you need to do is determine exactly what is wrong with your machine and you can only do that by stripping it down. In this regard you may find the manual at the following site useful: -

Thanks, David. I,ve got a new washer on the way. Maybe I’ll find the time to order those parts after I’ve torn the machine down with nothing to lose!! I’ll get back to you guys & report any progress.

anyone one this site have the front plastic for the door of a duet drier.i was trying to put the dryer on top of the washing mashine with my dad(bad communication)and it tipped over and fell 3 1/2ft on its face.busted at the top seams.put it back together.works great still. had it since ‘04 its one of the first style front loader units bought it for $150 floor model at lowes couple of scrathes nothing bad.had some electronic part replaced after a few months because of error code, still under waranty.i thought these machines were great until i came upon this site looking for a part.i also paid $400 for a matching washer same place/conditions diferent color.any way with all these junk machines any one one here have the plexiglass window that goes on the door.also my wife uses regular tide deturgent, use to use wisk (not HE) no problems yet.we do try and leave the door open because of musty smell and it works, what doesn’t work is her leaving wet clothes in there for a day or two.(im not being srcastic) we did buy the vibration pads they sell at lowes for$30 that you put under machine.helped the little vibration we did have, now you cant here the vibration at all.also you should put a pan with a drain under any washmachine especialy if its not in a basement they sell them in any plumbing supply store, bigger is better.i havent had any major problems with whirpool acually thought it was a great product especially after dryer fell and still works great, but i will not be buying any more whirpool products after reading this forum.(i guess you dont here about the good because if every thing is working properly you wont be on here looking for asnswers either)

Hi. I go through a few of one’s other posts and wished to understand in the event you would be interested in exchanging blogroll links. welcome to Links of London
May 24th, 2011 at 5:52 pm
I purchased my Whirpool Duet washer and dryer in July of 2002. They have worked perfectly ever since.
I had a couple of minor error code situations early on, but it seems the electronics were just confused because after disconnecting power for a few minutes, everything was fine.
There is no odor problem. I do wipe out the rubber gasket area after each wash and leave the door open while clothes are drying. I close the door when I am all done washing. No mold, no odor, no holes in clothes or clothes getting torn up!!!! Sounds crazy to me.
The reason I am posting here is because I had a problem last night…the machine did not complete its cycle, didn’t drain and spin out at the end. I have gotten it to drain and spin out since then, after shutting off power to the machine over night, so it appears it is not a mechanical problem…it is able to spin and drain.
I came to this site because I anticipate that I might have more problems and wanted to get some ideas. But the machine has worked perfectly for nine years!! And I was a MINIMUM of seven loads a week, including blankets, king size comforters, stinky, hairy dog bedding, cushions, small area rugs, you name it.

Undeniably believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification appeared to be on the net the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people think about worries that they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

DOES ANY ONE MAKE QUALITY ANYMORE????
July 8th, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Purchased the Whirlpool Duet in Dec. 08′ (2 1/2 yrs. old) and the washer is making a terrible loud noise in the spin cycle. The noise has progressed so bad that I called a repairman to check it out. He informed me that the rear bearings are gone and that it would cost me $ 700.00 to get it fixed as it is no longer covered under warranty. Crappie product…do not buy!!!
July 12th, 2011 at 5:31 pm
Whirlpool Duet is a piece of crap and Whirlpool has the worst customer service ever. Will never buy another Whirlpool product.
July 14th, 2011 at 12:09 am
FYI-
I called Lowe’s (where we purchased the set) and freaked out to them since Whirlpool wouldn’t do anything. I was 8 months pregnant so the hormones helped
I basically told them they should back the products they sell blah blah blah. After 3 managers and a loud rant we got a replacement washer with free delivery and haul away. We opted for a top loader since the repairman said front loaders are junk. In the meantime, before Lowe’s gave in, I filed a complaint against Whirlpool with my Atty General’s Office. That got Whirlpool on its toes. However, by that time, Lowe’s replaced our washer. Good Luck
July 14th, 2011 at 12:12 am
FYI-
After much hassle, we finally had our Whirlpool Duet replaced by Lowe’s. We pitched a fit and it worked. I was 8 months pregnant so the hormones didn’t hurt. We preached to them about backing the products they sell, blah blah. Apparently we made a big enough of a stink and received a new washer. During that process we filed a complaint with our local Atty General’s OFfice. THis got Whirlpool’s attention but by that time we had a new washer! GL
July 17th, 2011 at 3:52 am
Our Whirlpool Duet Front load Washer has just gone out after 3 Years of use. It started with the washer going to Sud and then shutting down with a F-35. Nobody locally can fix it. We spent alot for the washer and dryer and purchased them in green which is of course no longer available. These are a terrible purchase and buyers should be aware of this. We also have the mold smell. Whirlpool should have recalled them. We will be filing a complaint.
July 18th, 2011 at 5:27 pm
I also purchased the Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer set in 2004. I had many issues with them the first two years and regretted my purchase ever since. They started with the codes listed that everyone else is having, bearings went out within 3 years, door locked and had to have service guy come out to unlock it. The washer became progressively louder through the years and also has had a moldy smell for the last 4 years no matter what we do to the seal, cleaning it with bleach, running bleach through the washer cycle, etc. We always leave the washer door open when not using. The dryer has never dried the clothes all the way on regular timed cycles, we put it on 60 minutes on timed cycle to get clothes dry. I also bought Whirlpool appliances for my kitchen such a the refrigerator I have had a repairman out at least 3 times in the first 2 years of use. It is terrible also. It is loud and the ice maker after already being replaced still doesn’t work properly. It takes 3 days for the ice bucket to fill up after using the ice from it. We have tried to fix it ourselves but to no avail. The noise we were told is the blower unit that cools it in the back and it has already been replaced once. We don’t have extended warranty on it and don’t want to pay the $85 for the part and fix it again ourselves. The stove hasn’t been efficient at all, the over the hood microwave which we purchased the more expensive one the handle is completely a different color than the rest of the unit now and appears very cheap. The dishwasher we haven’t had an issue with yet for not working however it doesn’t get the dishes clean unless we rinse them off very clean prior to putting them in dishwasher. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A WHIRLPOOL APPLIANCE AGAIN. After reading all the posts online I see we are not alone in our issues. They really should quit making appliances in my opinion.
July 20th, 2011 at 4:23 am
Our 2006 Kenmore / is a Whirlpool by model number. Ii is on it’s 3rd water pump. The 2nd water pump was working but sounded like it was about to go out (loud). I started getting an F6 error . I had a spair water pump that Sears sent me by mistake, so I kept it. I was sure I would need it one day. New water pump is now quite and smooth. Anyway , I started getting an F6 error flashing. Like on some reviews I’ve read, F6 shows up when it wants to. I can go 2 days and 4 or 5 loads before I will see it again. F6 code in the book has something to do with Tachometer recognition. It wanted me to check wires to motor which looks like a pain to get to. Other than water pumps and the F6 it has been a good washer, but I still haven’t got 1300.00 of work out of it yet. Unlike other people,I won’t spend money on repairmen and over priced parts. I will go get a new one and run through the warrenty years again. A 5 year warrenty is about the same as one repairmen being called out. Sears is high on parts too. Hope this helps someone, I think I just made it through another cycle without and error, yeehaw!!!
July 28th, 2011 at 8:24 pm
I am absolutely furious! It appears that I have at least 300 other Whirlpool Washer owners in the same state of mind.
I purchased a brand new “energy saver” Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer less than 2 years ago. The total bill for these appliances was $2200.00. Last week I started getting error codes, which locked the washer door and prevented the machine from going through any cycles. I managed through Google to get instructions on how to at least retrieve my clothes, sopping wet from the washer.
So, I called repairman #1, arranged for a repair call, only to be called back by him saying I need to call Whirlpool for the part myself. Well, they were closed for the day east coast time. Next, I called a Whirlpool recommended repairman #2. He came out on Friday 7-22, did a diagnostic to the tune of $97.46, and then told me this pressure switch part was on back order til 7-29 and had been pushed back 3 times by Whirlpool . This part would cost $371.91 and there are 300 other customers waiting for this part. He wanted half down to order the part. Told him I would think about it.
After he left, I sent Whirpool a note on their website expressing my displeasure. No response from them. Told them I would be contacting the Attorney General, if they did not resolve this.
On Monday, I called repairman #3, finally talked to him yesterday. Said he might have the part on his truck. He said he would call me back. No call back. He is not answering his phone.
I now understand there is no ETA for this part. Does anyone know if there is a class action lawsuit going on?
So, Jesse, at this point, I have been without a washer for a solid week. I just got off the phone with the recommended parts department, and got the same story of part not available. My only option is to buy a new machine, and I am almost forced to buy another Whirlpool Duet if I want it to match the operable Whirlpool dryer, or buy another brand new washer and dryer, which is going to run into a lot of money. I have never bought the extended warranties that Whirlpool has constantly offered me. Actually, it would not do me any good, since the part is not available.
I am really frustrated. I am furious that our hard earned money has landed in the pockets of a big company, for a shoddy product, and they could care less.
July 29th, 2011 at 8:04 am
Mary Ann
I understand your frustration.
However before anyone can help we will need the full model number of your machine and the error code(s) you were getting. Additionally the part number and/or full name of the ‘switch’ would also be very helpful.
The only class action lawsuits I am aware of against Whirlpool concern the mold and foul odour issues.
Should you know anyone with any DIY skills the manual available here may prove helpful: -
https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/eab852a13fbc842085256aa200643dd6/FILE/Duet%20Job%20Aid.pdf
I am assuming that your own DIY skills in respect to washers are somewhat limited; please forgive me should I be in error, even getting the door unlocked is beyond many people.
July 29th, 2011 at 3:20 pm
To get the Whirlpool Duet front loader washer unlocked, do the following: Unplug the machine or throw the circuit breaker. Keep the power off for several minutes. Turn power back on. Turn washer dial to drain/spin. Press Pause/Cancel button. Works every time!
July 29th, 2011 at 4:41 pm
Sorry so many posts by me re: The Whirlpool Duet front loader.
Model # WFW9500TWO. Error Codes “SUD” and “F35″. Part, Pressure Switch # W10156252
This morning, I filed a complaint with the Attorney General. Unlike the previous gal who went to Lowe’s and raised hell, the place I bought mine from is out of business. I also sent an email to Get Jesse at our local TV station, who takes on these “BIG COMPANIES” and gets results.
After the past two weeks of non stop frustration, the only way Whirlpool can make me happy is to replace my machine (washer and dryer) or refund my $2200.00, so that I can go get another BRAND!
August 3rd, 2011 at 2:53 am
I have a whirlpool duet washer and dryer (front load). The thing is so bouncy its not even funny.Had the techs out like 5 times. Lowes where I bought it just gave me a store credit for the amount of the washer. But they cancled my extended service protection plan. Still had like 3 years plus on that. Big companys dont really care about consumers. They only replaced the unit with in store credit because they lost all there profit on the repairs they had to pay for. But anyway heres what I did.I kept the washer. I attatched some rubber bumpers to the cement counter weights. Problem gone. The washer is so out of balance that the cement counter weights were banging up against the metal inside front face of the washer and was breaking the cement blocks to bits. So I put some rubber bumpers on them and boo yeah problem solved.

I purchases a Whirlpoolduet sport front-loading washing machine 2 years ago and we’ve only had problems with it. The bellow seal has broken every time we run the sanitary cycle and the machine shakes the entire house. It is a piece of junk and I will never purchase a whirlpool product again.
September 22nd, 2011 at 7:54 pm
Purchasing the Whirlpool Duet Sports was the worst mistake I could have made. During the 4 years I have had it, the repairs have totaled over 10. I am very unhappy with this machine and would not recommend it to anyone. TAKE THAT PEICE OF JUNK OFF THE MARKET. YOU GET WAHT YOU PAY FOR.

Mine leaks out the door, it doesn’t seal properly when it closes. it’s only just over one year old. full of mold and very stanky. what a piece of crap.

October 27th, 2011 at 6:22 pm
Well I purchased my Whirlpool Steam Duet Washer & Dryer (Green) 3 years ago. Previously I had a Kenmore washer and dryer, never had a problem with either for 19 years. I wish now I would have kept them when I moved to my new home. What an aggravating, inconveniece and problem I have had. F35 code and the SUD error constantly. I have done all the “fix it myself” things I have found on the internet. My manual does not even address or have the F35 code in the trouble shooting part or any other part. I mean, come on, we all have to wash our clothes. It is inexcusable that Whirlpool has not recalled this product. The place I purchased it at (brand new) is out of business. I wish now I had gone to Lowes or Home Depot, at least I could go to them and get some help or replacement. Now the part supposedly I need is on back order????? What the hell. This is just ridiculous. I really feel bad for mothers who have several children and end up at the laundry mat. I really hope to see the woman that posted here named Maryann on the Television telling whirlpool what they can do with this EXPENSIVE junk they have put out and now not recalling or fixing at their expense. Sony did the right thing with the big screen T.V’s, I have one and would buy another Sony BUT I will never purchased or reccommend a Whirlpool product to anyone……..I will tell anyone who will listen what junk they make and do not stand by. Whoever is running that company sure has dropped the ball on this one. Shame on Whirlpool.
October 27th, 2011 at 6:35 pm
To April,
What part are you looking for?
October 27th, 2011 at 6:45 pm
I purchased my Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer 9 years ago this past August and just had my first service call. A pump went out it, was a simple repair.
I do at least eight loads a week, including one sanitary cycle once a week. On two-three of the loads I do a soak cycle before the wash cycle, and on every load I do an extra rinse. I leave the door open when done so the washer completely dries out. All this might explain why I never have an odor problem.
I always use Tide laundry detergent that is specially formulated for HE washers, which may explain why I never have the SUD problem. Several years ago I accidentally bought regular laundry detergent and put it in the machine before I realized and got the SUD message. Just use the right detergent in the right amount, there should not be a problem.
As for the whole house shaking…no, doesn’t happen. Thank goodness. I live in an earthquake zone and if a washing machine could shake the whole house, I’d really be worried about a big earthquake!
I love my Whirpool Duet washer and dryer. One service call in the first nine years…I can live with that considering how much money I’ve saved over going to a laundrymat.
