How To Clean Your Oven Properly

`497577_banana_bread.jpg   Cleaning an oven sounds like a daunting task and it can be, especially when you don’t take care of the oven and have a very bad situation to deal with coming in.  Yet, today’s products make cleaning the oven, even some of the worst, less of a hassle and much more of a process that just takes some time and a bit of elbow grease.  Yet, it is very important to make sure that the oven is cleaned the right way, using the right products and methods for your specific unit.  Therefore, it is smart to take the time to read through your owner’s manual to find out if there are any suggestions or restrictions on how to clean your unit.

Steps To A Clean Oven
There are two different types of ovens:  self cleaning ovens and ovens that have to be manually cleaned.  Some of these steps will differ depending on the type of unit that you have.

  1. Remove the broiler pan, racks and other removable elements from the interior of the oven.  These should be washed separately unless your self cleaning oven directs you to leave them in.
  2. For all ovens, you will need to wipe out the interior of the oven from any particles that can be removed.  Anything that is loose inside should be removed otherwise it could back into the glaze on the inside of your oven and cause a number of problems including uneven heating later.  Remove as much debris as possible from the interior of the oven.
  3. For a self cleaning oven, follow the direction provided with the oven.  This type of oven works by heating the oven to a very high temperature.  This will oxidize or burn off anything and everything within the oven.  You should consult the manual for how to operate and use the self cleaning oven features.
  4. For ovens that require manual cleaning, you can use oven cleaning chemicals that are widely available.  These can be easily purchased, but all have a bit of a different direction in how they should be used.  Most of the time, you will spray the interior of the oven with the chemical, allow it to sit and heat the oven, which will remove the debris from the oven.  It is best to do this when no one is in the home, unless otherwise directed by the manufacturer of the product.
  5. After the cleaning cycle is complete, you will need to use a damp towel to wipe out the inside of the oven.  All dust, debris and chemical residue needs to be wiped clean.  This will provide you with a clean interior.

By providing some cleaning to your oven on a regular basis, simply wiping down the interior, will allow you to avoid having to do this more often.  When you are cooking foods that could potentially spill over, place a sheet of tin foil under the cooking pans and at the bottom of the oven.  Wipe up spills as they happen rather than allowing them to bake into the walls and the bottom of the oven.

hello… I hope you can help. I don’t have my instructions for my self-cleaning GE oven. I didn’t even know it came with them, grrr for me *s*.

If you know where I can find them online and pass it on to me I would be very grateful. I was told about 15 years ago with our old self-cleaning oven (when it was installed), that oven sprays cannot be used. But the buildup with only the high temp really isn’t enough and know sprays will help get rid of whatever is on the walls, etc.

Many thanks, Happy New Year, Molly

Not an easy job to clean an oven. But I agree, do it often and don’t let it get to a bad state and it will stay clean. There are also many professionals who do this now days. Depends what the individual person prefers.

Some people rely on natural products such as vinegar or lemon juice, I haven’t tried this myself though.
