There are a couple ways that you can do this. If you still have the original papers that came with your appliance then you can check these to see which icemakers are recommended for that model. You can also contact the manufacturer of the refrigerator and explain to them what type of unit you have and they will be able to tell you which icemakers fit that particular model best.
Once you have purchased the correct icemaker then you are ready to begin the installation. Start by making sure you have all the tools and any supplies you need on hand. These will include the following.
- Two adjustable wrenches
- Compression fittings for the tubing
- Saddle valve
- Drill
After gathering all of your supplies together you need to look for the water inlet located on your refrigerator. This is usually found on the back of the unit near the bottom. You are now ready to connect the supply line to the water inlet.
To do this you need to put a compression nut over the supply line. Make sure that you have the open side facing the end of the tube. Take the ferrule that came with the compression nut and slide it over the tube inserting the end into the water inlet. Tighten the nut with your finger enough to hold it secure until you can finish tightening it with the two wrenches.
Icemakers come with two different styles of tubing, some are copper and the others are plastic. When working with plastic tubing you will need to insert a brass support into the line before attaching it to the supply valve to avoid crushing the tube.
Next, you need to locate the nearest water value and tap into the cold water line. You can do this by using a saddle value. The saddle value is a neat little invention that will let you tap into a water line without having to shut off the main flow of water to your home.
You place the saddle value over the water line and make sure that you have the rubber seal in place then tighten the bolts. You will then need to turn the value clockwise to pierce the water line. Make sure that the valve is completely closed before leaving this step.
At this point you may be wondering why you needed to have a drill handy. This is because many times to avoid having a water line running across your kitchen from the main water value to the refrigerator you will need to drill a hole to hide the line. You can do this in the floor or in the wall whichever works best for you. Just always remember to do this step before tapping into the water line if it is necessary. Now you have all the basic information needed to install an icemaker fast, easy and professionally.
