Wed, Apr 4, 2007
Most home appliances will need repair at some time. You could pick up the phone and make that expensive call for something small like basic appliance repair. Or, you could learn how to do these things yourself. Appliances that have gaskets are the ideal place to start. Gaskets keep the heat/cold in and the room temperature out. A small hole or a worn gasket can lead to spoiled food or a leaking oven. These things can be managed by you, in some regard. There’s no need to pay someone else to fix what you can!
Repairing Gaskets
Gaskets keep your appliances working efficiently. By keeping the temperature correct, the appliance can do its job easier. In conjunction with this, it also helps to keep the appliance from pulling more energy, which means that gaskets help to keep your appliance energy efficient. Does yours need to be replaced? Touch and look at it. If the gasket has any signs of wear, such as rips or holes, or if it feels too hard, then it’s time to repair it. It should have a spring back ability to it.
When replacing them, make sure to purchase the gasket designed for the appliance rather than a generic one. There are two types to consider (purchase the same time that is currently being used on the appliance.) In a channel mount gasket, the gasket is held into place by a groove. In a flush mount gasket, the gasket is secured with clips or a screw.
Here is how simple this appliance repair can be:
- Remove the old gasket making sure to remove the entire thing. This may involve removing the screws or pulling it from the channel and removing any adhesive in the groove.
- Clean the area completely, removing anything that’s there including debris. Use a mild detergent and allow the entire door to dry before moving forward.
- Replace with a new gasket. Since you have purchased the same type as was originally used, the process is simple. The goal will be to get positioning correct as well as fitting the corners. Work on it until it is flush.
- Determine if the manufacturer suggests using gasket cement to keep it in place. Do not use if told not to!
- If the gasket is a flush mount one, you will then need to replace the screws for the gasket to secure it.
- For a channel gasket, simply use a spinning tool to get it into the groove correctly. This will apply just the right pressure.
The key element in replacing gaskets is to make sure that when the door is closed that a seal forms evenly around the entire door. This provides the necessary protection for your appliance to work. Any gaps or uneven areas should be realigned for this even fit. The good news is that gaskets are readily available to be used in most home improvement stores. They will not cost you much, but they will provide your appliance with efficiency again. Ultimately, they can even provide you with a cost savings in energy.
