GE Dishwasher Motor Repair Problem
Fri, Mar 9, 2007
Today, we’ll be covering a very common problem with older GE dishwashers. Below is a copy of a conversation between a homeowner and an AppliancePartsPros technician who sometimes participates in the DIY Network home improvement forum.
Digi:
Need help with 10 year old GE dishwasher -
the water fills up - the motor humms - but it doesn’t go into a wash cycle.
when you turn the main knob into a wash cycle nothing happens ( only hums )
Is this a bad motor? can I fix it myself?
Can you help and advise me??
or is it not worth fixing?
thanks
Digi

APP tech:
Digi, post the dishwasher model (starts with GSD). I need to see whether it has the older or the newer pump/motor assembly. If it’s the older design, there is a way to release the motor.
Make sure to get the model number off the dishwasher itself. Here is our Model number locator if you need to know where the tag is.

thank you for your help; here is the information
GSD 2000 Z02AD
I also checked the circut breaker and it was ok.
Appreciate your help - Hope you can help me with this information.
thank you

APP tech:
You’re in luck Digi,
This motor can be released. This is a very common problem on GE dishwashers. First, make sure to unplug the power to the dishwasher (unplug the cord), it may be obvious but I still have to mention it…
Remove the bottom kickpanel (four screws, one in each corner). Now you should have the motor exposed. There is a large blade that is right in the middle of the motor with its fins partially exposed. Rotate the blade a few times until you no longer feel any pressure. Using a flashlight check the floor for any signs of water damage. If none is present, put the kickpanel back on, plug the dishwasher cord in and try a cycle. It should work fine.
In rare cases the pump seal may break, so keep an eye out for any leaks during the drain cycle. If you find that the seal is bad, you can either rebuild the pump (not a complicated task) using a pump/motor rebuild kit or replace the entire pump/motor assembly if you don’t feel like spending the time. But again, this does not happen often, usually the pump is fine after the motor is released.
Breakdown diagrams for your model
Hope this helps,

Glad to hear that it worked. It’s been a couple of weeks, I thought you’d given up and bought a new one.
I know those Sears commercials may be a little too persuasive, but appliances ARE made to last… with a little help that is

I have the same problem with a GE Model GSD700G-01. Any chance I can do the same fix?
June 8th, 2007 at 5:03 am
I don’t see why not, Dan. This is a pretty common problem with GE dishwashers and this fix works in most cases. Sometimes, if the dishwasher is rather old, the seal might break. In this case, you can either rebuild the pump with a pump/motor impeller kit or replace the entire pump/motor assembly with a new one. Read and follow the APP guy’s instructions closely and don’t forget to let us know how it turns out!

I have a similar sounding but differenr problem with my GE Dishwasher.
It makes a lot of noise. Until last week it used to wash with the noise. Now the noise is louder and water does not enter the dishwasher. I checked the water lines and they seem fine. So I removed the kick board and took a look at the motor. As far as I can tell there is no leak and the fins rotate freely. But the noise seems to originate from the motor when I run the machine.
I called service and they said it could be that the blades are broken.
Do you have any suggestions? Can I (is it even worth trying) fix this by myself? or should I run to homedepot to get a new one?
Oh I almost forgot, the model number is
GSD1180T55WW
Many tks in advance.
June 10th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
RR, Sounds like you may have two problems there. The no water problem may be caused by a faulty inlet water valve (at the bottom of the diswasher, to the left of the pump) or a clogged screen inside the valve. The sound you are describing probably means that the motor is bad. New pump/motor assembly is about $125. Water valve $30. If you fix it yourself, then you’re looking at spending about $160-$170 total. Add atleast $120 if you’re calling for service.
If you decide to get a new dishwasher, I would recommend getting a different brand. Whirlpool if you don’t want to spend too much, Bosch if you want to invest in a quality dishwasher. Can you get a new dishwasher for $300? Yes, you can even get one for $180. Will you be happy with it? Most likely not and it’d be a waste of $300.
Keep us updated.

If I have to spin the motor fins almost everytime, is there a way to lubricate the motor? I read somewhere about running a vinegar solution through a cycle?
December 13th, 2007 at 8:37 am
Sounds like it’s time for a new pump/motor assembly there, Royboy - http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=2616850

I have the same problem with my built in dishwasher model GSD700G. Sounds like the motor is stuck. I removed the lower panel but the motor is not visible at all. Al I see is wiring and connectors. Where can I access the motor? Thanks.
January 1st, 2008 at 5:54 am
The motor should be visible once both kickpanels have been removed. If you can, take a picture and provide link here.
January 2nd, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Thanks for the response. Dont have a camera handy at the moment. Based on what you write, sounds like there is another panel that should be removed? BuAt the very bottom is just a metal panel that sits on the floor. I dont see any. I only see one lower panel which I removed, as stated in my previous comment. The wiring/connectors and some foam ( for sound proffing ) is visible.
Any other comments will be appreciated. bear in mind this built in model GSD700G is apprx 15 yrs old.
January 18th, 2008 at 2:07 am
I located the motor :). I checked the motor and spin the motor fins. it moved freely,OK. So what could be wrong? I tried again. I noticed that, after water filled in, the knob was turning slowly. So, the knob doesn’t seem stuck. Also, I smelled a bit burning. I turned it off when the wash cycle did not start. As I recall, the wash cycle used to start immediately after the water filled in.
Now the water is sitting in the dish washer. I guess I will remove the water manually as I did previously. Any thoughts?
February 2nd, 2008 at 10:43 pm
PLease ignore my previous Post. I was reading about the similar problem elsewhere ( FixYa) and there was a picture of the motor posted there. Looking at it I realize that I have been trying to move the “vane” at the wrong place. When I removed the panel, I see the back side of the motor. At the backside there are some vents and inside something that roatates with finger easily. But as I look at the picture, the vane is located on or closer to the front of the motor. Correct? There I was able to feel a large Blade and inside something that was very hard to move. So, it is stuck. I will try to put some pressure there and see if I can get it released. I guess it should move clockwise? Am I right? Thnx for all your help and would appreciate a response.
February 3rd, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Sounds like you found it. Doesn’t matter which way to move it. Good luck and don’t forget to check for water leaks afterwards.

Problem with GE dishwasher Model GSD1200G06. My problem is similar to rr’s problem posted 6/10/07. My dishwasher make unusual noises while running, especially at the beginning of the cycle. do you think I need a new pump/moter assembly? is it difficult to install? I unscrewed the drain covers and checked for debris– the drain and screen was pretty clean. by the way, when the dw runs it does a good job of cleaning the dishes. No problems with water, leaks, etc. Is it ok to keep running it while it is making these noises? Thanks for your help. Kathy
(I like this dishwasher but don’t want to fix it if it makes no economic sense to do so.)

Three year old GE dishwasher–model@GLD5860LOOSS, ser.#RH723220B has very loud vibrating noise during the wash cycle. Started out intermittent, now does it continually. I had a tech come out; he took the pump out and cleaned it. It didn’t make any noise for that day but started back the very next day (down $100 and still have same problem) Thanks for your help!

I seem to be having the same problem with my GSD2000J01WW but it seems have the newer motor, is there any way to release it?
http://www.appliancepartsworldwide.com/Products/WD26X10013.jpg
January 20th, 2009 at 7:01 am
Ryan, the “proper” answer is no, you can’t release this newer motor. Different design. This motor was actually supposed to be an improvement on GE’s part with the addition of a capacitor that should give it a little kick at the start in case it gets stuck. I was able to release it once, but usually just end up replacing the pump and motor assembly.
Bryan, your model uses a completely different style pump and motor assembly. This is a newer, redesigned model. Post your question on the repair forum http://forum.appliancepartspros.com and someone will help. Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with this model.
Kathy, was it always this noisy or is this new?
January 21st, 2009 at 2:31 pm
the noise was new. i had a ge serviceman over and he said the motor was shot and that I should either replace the motor or buy a new dishwasher. i decided that i will buy a new one. but yesterday, for some unknown reason, the motor stopped making the noise and the dishwasher started running perfectly fine. isn’t that strange? what do you think? Is it about to konk out any time soon?
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
Kathy, it almost sounds like the motor blade is loose. If that’s the case, then the pump and motor assembly needs to be replaced. However, I’ve never heard of it going “back to normal”.
Another possibility is something got stuck inside the pump right where the impeller is and it may have worked itself out of the pump. I would watch the dishwasher closely for a couple of weeks to make sure it doesn’t start leaking water out of the pump (in case the pump seal got damaged).

Hello, App Tech,
I have a GE GSD 3330 with a nearly stuck motor. The dishwasher only hums when turned on. Using a wooden spoon handle, the impeller turns only about a quarter turn. I have poured boiling water inside the washer, tried turning the motor for 5-6 minutes at a time, still as sticky as when I began. Does it sound like I need the rebuild?
Thanks,
Mike
February 4th, 2009 at 12:28 am
Just an update: I went to remove the motor to replace it, but when I unscrewed it and started to remove it, it wouldn’t come off. though it wouldn’t come off, it would rotate around the middle (stuck part) so I screwed it back on and the motor turned with ease. Turns out that trying to remove it actually fixed it, at least for now.
February 4th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Mike, I’m not APP Tech
You can post a question on their repair forum at http://forum.appliancepartspros.com
Does sound like the motor is stuck. You may have to use a bit more force to release the motor blade.

My GE dishwasher soap dispenser isn’t working right. It seems to release at the end of the rinse/dry cycle. End result is soap residue all over the dishes after the dry cycle. Can I repair myself? - if so, how to do it? (Model# GSD3725DBB purchased in yr 2000)

Hi I have a GSD500L-02AW When I run the dishwasher - washes fine -but it makes this grinding noise. Sounds sort of like when you turn the ignition on of a car when the engine is already running. The grinding was mostly when I start the unit now it makes the noise on and off through the entire cycle.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

I have a GE Dishwasher model: GSC340Z00WW with a serial of: AT604475A.
The water was coming out between the door and the kickplate. Took off the kickplate and I do not see any “fins”. Any ideas as to what is wrong? Is a new dishwasher on my horizon?
Thank You! :o)

I have the same problem as tetris15 with a little water coming out of the washer between the bottom of the door and the kickplace. This is a fairly new problem. The biggest problem I am having right now, and have had for the last year, is that often I get a “C8″ message - detergent door failed to open. The detergent still gets out, however, and the dishes come sparkly clean…
This is a GE Twenty-Eight Hundred, model #GSD2800D03. It came with my home, so I know it’s at least 15 years old; I think the previous owner only had it about two years (so 17 years old in all!). SUPER washing machine and I’m hoping I can salvage it since this seems like such a small problem. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

WOW!! I followed directions in original post March 2007, and it worked!! Thank you for helping us all!
You have to understand that I have been WITHOUT a dishwasher for almost 6months, which causes my house to ALWAYS stay cluttered because it starts in the Kitchen. This has affected everything in our home and family, including social, spiritual, and mental health.
My husband is one to buy new instead of fixing. With my curious and determined nature, as well as limited finances, I held out and FIXED it today. I only tell you all this because this one task represents SO MUCH MORE than an simple fixed dishwasher!!
Thank you for providing your continued free support! You will be Blessed!

I just replaced my motor but failed to note the orientaion of the wiring connector to the pump. One spade has two red/white leads. Does that go to the left or right, as looking from the front of the machine. Dumb mistake.
April 11th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
I have a GSD2800G03, and it’s making the humming noise. I was able to find the blade and spin it, as described above. It spins freely, however the motor still hums and does not start.
Does it mean I need a new motor? If so, can it be replaced while the dishwasher is in place? To remove the dishwasher I would need to disassemble the counter, as the dishwasher sits directly on the subfloor. And if that’s the case, I might just buy a new one.
Thanks!

Hope you have some advise:
GE GSD700G-02
When the wash cycle is started the water enters the chamber and the solonoid engages but the impeller is not turning. I can move the motor fan freely in either direction but it does not seem to be turning on. Is there a fuse for the motor, I would assume that since the solonoid is closing that the motor has power is that not the case? Guess I am wonder should I replace the motor and what is the expected $$$ with that? Thanks! –Michael

I have a GE dishwasher GHD5025F01BB. The problem all the water does not pump out at end of cycle. Used a troubleshooting guide and replaced so far: Timer, Motor assembly, Check Valve in rear under strainer. I also tested the seperate aux-pump with a test cord and it pumped all the water out without a problem. None of what I done solved problem. However I do know the check valve was bad before it was changed. It was leaking back into dishwasher when I first tested the aux-pump with a test cord and dishwasher door open.
Thank You

We have a GE dishwasher less than 2 years old ( min. use) Last night went to empty dishwasher basin filled with water that had not drained. We turned off dishwasher, checked garbage disposal, worked fine, kitchen sink works fine and draining properly, washed and cleaned out air gap-this was fine. Proceeded to put dish washer on again, rinse cycle. We could hear the water the first time draining out into sink. The last cylce again left water in basin of dishwasher. This has never happened with any dishwasher we have ever owned. Please advise.
Thanks

I have a ge GSD2000Z00WH. The dishwasher used to work fine but after a renovation in the kitchen (dishwasher has not been used for 3 months), it seems to be stuck now. I tried to spin the fins as described previously. They are tight and remain tight no matter which direction I move them in. I noticed that the motor is hot to the touch. While spinning the fins, I noticed something dripping but I don’t believe it was water. Possibly lubricant? How do you know if both the pump and motor need to be replaced? Or can you get away with just replacing the motor in this case?
July 11th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Redeye, there is no lubricant. Could be left over residue from inside the pump which would mean that the pump seal might be broken in addition to a stuck motor. If you hear a humming noise coming from the motor when the dishwasher is turned on, you have two options - try releasing the motor again and be prepared to replace the pump seal kit http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=631386 OR replace the entire pump / motor assembly http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=2616850

Our dishwasher came with our house and is 5 years old - sometimes it is noisier than others. (Its’ being doing this for about 1 year)It sounds like a whirr sound and is louder than our TV. When we first moved in our nieghbors commented on how quiet our dishwasher was. So what should I do to fix it?

Hello My GE portable dishwasher model GSC3508K00WW stopped draining. I scooped the water out, took the screen thing off (from inside the machine)and found cherry pits and plastic wrap in the drain screen. Cleaned it off and then found a small metal blade in the bottom of the drain area. The hole in the middle isn’t threaded so my question is how does this attach to the shaft? Is there a nut missing? do I need to replace the whole drain unit?
Thanks Very much

hi. i have a GE dishwasher, approx 3+ years old. model #GSD2000J01BB. i had sears out to troubleshoot, and he said that the motor needs to be replaced. i watched him try the same process that you described at the beginning of this thread - to no avail. that’s fine - i’m up to the challenge of replacing the motor. however, before i purchase one, i’d like to make certain that i’m getting the right one. can you point me in the direction of the correct motor for this model dishwasher? thanks much!
August 4th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
JimmyG, model GSD2000J01BB takes the same pump/motor as described above. It is also #310 on this diagram: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?diagram_id=25195226&&model_id=5234528

Sean, the chopper blade came off from the back of the pump. The blade screws on to the impeller shaft and should be threaded. See second photo here: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=631386

Hi there,
I’ve got a GE dishwasher model no GSD4148X02WW that won’t drain all the way on the final cycle. I’ve checked the drain hose and the solenoid still has juice in it. 40 ohms. There are no other obstructions inside. One thing I noticed is a small ticking during the cycle. Is the motor shot? It always seems to be about the same amount of water left. thanks so much for the help.

I had the same motor humming problem on my GSD2000Z02HW. Spent the whole morning messing with it. Then I came across these fixes. I spun the fan and, wham, it works. Thanks for the help.

I have a GSD2200 with the humming and stuck motor that is described. When I try to rotate the blades they turn very stiffly and actually spring back no matter which direction I turn them. Seems to me that there is possible something in the pump housing which might cause this. I can turn the blade using 2 different screwdrivers but the blade never frees up. Any suggestions?
August 17th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Ttunka, still sounds like the motor is stuck. You should feel pressure from the blade exactly as you’re describing it. Force it more and it should come loose.
August 20th, 2009 at 2:49 am
hi. thanks for the help on locating the motor/pump assembly. i got one in the mail recently. i just spent a bunch of time getting the old motor/pump assembly off the washer, and installed the new one. after all is back together - it still doesn’t work. i have the same problem - tub fills with water (starts to, anyway), but the motor won’t kick on. it’s a brand new motor. the only difference that i can see is this: on the old motor - i can move the blades/shaft/disposal blade freely in either direction. on the new motor - i can’t move them at all. if i use a screwdriver to pry on the blades, i can get them to move ever so slightly… but still no working machine. any thoughts? thanks much!

Sounds like a have simular problem to one I read on the site with a stuck dishwasher motor. Mine is a Kenmoore 363.16229100 can This motor be released and if not what opptions do I have Thanks
September 8th, 2009 at 5:55 am
JimmyG, sorry for a late response. Here is what I would try. Unplug the dishwasher power cord, remove the outer door panel, then check the power wiring that comes down from the timer to the motor. Especially where it goes through the door at the bottom. This is somewhat of a common problem. Look for a pinched or broken wire INSIDE the wire insulation - the insulation may appear to be OK, but the wire might still be broken. If wiring checks out ok, I’d say the timer is bad.
September 8th, 2009 at 5:59 am
Max, from what I can tell the actuating cam you’re talking about is the drain solenoid. See number 497 on this diagram http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=209449&diagram_id=21609226#d21609226. If that’s the case, you need to replace seal number 417 (why a small piece of rubber is $13 I have no idea, GE charges even more - $15).
September 8th, 2009 at 6:03 am
Carl, you’re absolutely right. Kenmore is just a brand owned by Sears. Kenmore appliances are made by various manufacturers. The way you figure out the mfg is by the first three numbers of the model number. 363 = GE. (“Who made my Kenmore”)
List of parts for 363.16229100 http://www.appliancepartspros.com/modelsearch_model.aspx?model_id=434085
And, yes, you should be able to release this motor as described above.

GE Dishwasher Model PDW7300J00WW
Washer cycles thru wash, then does not drain out of bottom of tub. Followed all the suggestions above, but to no avail. Haven’t checked the drain pump output yet, but wondered if there was a test available from the front control panel to start/stop the pump-drain solenoid? This would simplify troubleshooting the system. My panel has smooth flat touch areas for the different modes, such as, left to right, Rinse Only, China Crystal, Speed Cycle, Normal Wash, Cook Ware, Anti-Bacteria, Start-Reset, 1-9 Delay Hours, Added Heat, Pre Wash, Heated Dry. Display”Time Remaining” Any help would be appreciated.

Checked output of drain pump in sink. None. Checked resistance of pump motor. Open circuit. Checked voltage on wiring to pump. 120VAC. Got new drain pump from local supplier, and replaced drain pump on dishwasher. Voila, now washer drains and all is well in washerland.

I need the repair diagram for a Ge GSD 5500G00BB installed dishwasher. I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Can you help? The water in the bottom of the dishwasher won’t drain after doing the normal repair procedures.

I have a GE Profile dishwasher GSD4930X66. I’m getting a C1 error code. Checked all of the drain lines, the air gap is clear, pressed the Reset button and the disposal is empty.
What happens is, when in Normal Cycle, all the water pumps out in about 1 minute 5 seconds but the pump keeps on running until the C1 error is displayed, then the pump stops at 2 plus minutes and the washer moves on to the next part of the cycle. C1 remains on the Display until I press the Reset button.
If I press the Reset button and then start the washer in the Rinse & Hold cycle, all the water pumps out in about 1 minute 5 seconds, the motor runs for about 15 to 20 seconds then turns off with no error.
What is causing the drain pump to continue running after all the water has been pumped out?
Thanks for your help.

The troubleshooting information was very helpful! One more thing I found was that in moving my Triton XL (GSD 6200) was that the plug in right next to the motor fins was just barely attached. Not causing a full connection. Once that was done…ALL IS WELL! And and added note is the dw has been moved 4 times and in storage for over a year not running! Hi, I just received a replacement motor (WD26X10015) from GE and noticed that the stainless steel wear ring seems to have a lot of play. In other words, I can feel and hear the wear ring wiggle when I hold the motor. There appears to be a gap of 2-3 mm which is allowing the ring to have so much play. Is the impeller mounted too far onto the motor shaft? It seems that the tolerance should be tighter than 2-3 mm, and when connect the motor to line current it makes a loud racket. Thanks.

Tirixe, sounds normal to me. You shouldn’t run the motor with no water inside the pump - it will ruin the seal. It is also why it was noisy. Once the new pump/motor is replaced, make sure to dump 2-3 cups of water in the tub before turning the dishwasher on.

We have the GE GSD3220z02BB dishwasher and the motor wasn’t working. So after reading what it said about turning the fins I did that and started it. It sounded great until the water started leaking. So we’ll need to fix the seal and rebuild the pump. We plan on buying that repair kit to do it but wanted to know if we would need to remove the motor to get to the pump seal
.It appears to be leaking behind the fan blades.
Thanks,

Yes, the entire pump/motor assembly needs to be removed in order for the pump to be rebuilt. You’re looking at about an hour of work here. Make sure to unplug the dishwasher power cord and turn off the dishwasher water shut off valve (usually under the sink) first.

We have a GE 1899J00WW dishwasher -
The problem - when we start the machine no water enters the wash bay. In addition I checked the lower spin bar and its does not move.By that I mean it spins freely but when I shut the door, turn it on, off and open the blade hasn’t moved We had a service tech come out and he explained I could do the repair myself and save a few hundred dollars. Dummy that I am I lost the notes on what parts I should be purchasing - IIRC he did not think it costly.
I have been viewing the exploded motor diagrams for the unit but for the life of me I’m stuck.
Any ideas would be great - my wife is none too happy.

Don’t worry about the spray arm. It only moves with water pressure. Sounds like the main problem with your GE dishwasher is no water. Usually, it’s due to a faulty water valve. Double check your model number. You’re missing a few letters in the beginning.

Usually, it’s due to a faulty water valve.
Thanks for the info. I posted this on another forum as well and you both pinpointed the same solution.
You offer a valuable service and I very much appreciate your attention to helping diy’s with your expert knowledge.

Our dishwasher is making a grinding noise during the wash cycle. Will the blade spin work for model GLD5560L00SS?
Thanks for you assistance.

I have a GE GSD3600, with the same issue reported previously by Ttunka:
“I have a GSD2200 with the humming and stuck motor that is described. When I try to rotate the blades they turn very stiffly and actually spring back no matter which direction I turn them. Seems to me that there is possible something in the pump housing which might cause this. I can turn the blade using 2 different screwdrivers but the blade never frees up. Any suggestions?”
I cannot seem to release the tension on the blades. Any ideas? Thanks!
