Tips For Basic Repair Needs For Your Appliance
There are several key things that must be understood first, before you move on to repairing any appliance.
- Before working with any appliance, make sure it has no power going to it. Unplug electrical power, turn off gas lines and then perform work. When turning them back on, do not touch them until you are sure they are working right through monitoring them.
- If you have to remove rivets or welds in order to work on the appliance, this is a sign that you should have a professional tackle the problem as there are likely to be complex aspects to it. On the other hand, screws, plugs, fasteners that you can take off and replace on your own show that this is a project you may be able to do.
- It is also important to realize that removing a broken part is likely to result in the purchase of a new one. Replacing the part is generally easier and more affordable (not to mention less time consuming) than trying to repair it. Larger cities will have appliance parts suppliers or you can find them available online.
Once you have considered those statements, it is time to determine what your problem is. For starters, make sure that the appliance is getting power to it. Is it plugged in and is the cord, outlet and circuit breaker (or fuse) working? This is the problem with most appliances that seem to just fail out of the blue. You can use a voltage tester to determine if the outlet is working itself.
Next, check for water and gas acceptance by the unit. Are these services working properly? If you aren’t getting gas, check your gas valves and other appliances to determine if gas is getting into your home. If not, call the gas company before moving farther. Does the appliance need water? Is the water on and running throughout the home? If not, call the water company to determine the water problem.
When these things are working and you still have problems, the best place to begin troubleshooting is with your appliance owner’s guide. Believe it or not, this is a resource that is full of the information you likely need. It can point you in the direction of the likely problem and offer explanations of how to repair them. If you do not have the owner’s manual, chances are good that a visit to the company’s website is all it will take. By taking these steps first, you limit the amount of times you have to call a professional for something that you could have repaired yourself.
