Thermador Cooktop Recall (released 06/07/07)
Thu, Jun 7, 2007
Today, only a couple of weeks after the announcement of GE Dishwasher Recall, another appliance recall is being announced. This time it’s from Thermador -
“Thermador® Ceramic Cooktops Recalled by BSH Home Appliances Corp. Due to Fire Hazard”
A high-end appliance manufacturer, Thermador has been known for the reliability of their product, primarily built-in ovens and cooktops. Thermador was acquired by BSH Home Appliances Corp. a few years ago. BSH also owns and markets in US Bosch brand appliances and Gaggenau brand appliances, both are also known for exceptional product quality.
The cooktop models being recalled were sold in appliance and specialty stores across US from October 2006 through March 2007 for between $1,800 and $2,200, all two thousand of them. These models were manufactured in Spain. The voluntary recall was issued after it became known that the cooktop can come on by itself when switched off, creating a potential fire hazard if flammable items are left on the cooktop. So far, no injuries have been reported. Models affected by this recall include CIT302DS/01 and CIT362DS/01 with date codes between 8606 and 8612. Model number can be found on a small tag on the underside of the cooktop. These cooktop models have induction heating elements with a black ceramic glass surface. See photos.

Thermador might want to update their web site. One of their cooktop ads being displayed on the home page shows a cooktop inflamed. Some people might find it funny or ironic, some inappropriate. Thermador’s PR department might find it a potential nightmare. You’re welcome, Thermador!
Thermador’s remedy: Consumers should disconnect the cooktop at the circuit breaker when not in use, and never leave anything on the cooktop when it is unattended. Contact BSH Home Appliances for a free in-home repair.
Consumer contact: For more information, contact BSH Home Appliances at (800) 758-1001 between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.thermador.com

[...] Thermador announced today a recall of about 42,000 Thermador built-in ovens. This latest recall comes only 22 days after Thermador’s cooktop recall. The threat is the same – fire hazard. The problem with these ovens is that the oven can have gaps in the insulation where overheating can occur and when used in the self-cleaning mode it can cause nearby cabinets to overheat (self-cleaning mode can heat the oven up to over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit). Obviously, this can pose a fire hazard to consumers. [...]
