Whirlpool Dryer Igniter (279311)

So, your Whirlpool dryer isn’t heating? No problem. Fixing this problem yourself would be a lot cheaper and easier. Try checking the igniter.
There are two ways to check for a faulty igniter (First, shut off the power to the dryer):

  • You would probably want to check for continuity on the thermal fuse first. If that works out fine, check the continuity on the igniter (make sure you unplug your dryer before touching any part). To check continuity, you would need a tool called an ohmmeter. Don’t worry, they’re inexpensive and easy to use.
  • The second way to check for a bad igniter would be to look for any cracks on the “glow bar” (the sparkley, gray part). Be sure not to touch the gray part because it is very sensitive. Keep in mind that if your igniter is glowing, there might be something wrong with the gas valve coils.
