User Itsuptoyoutoo shows us in the following youtube video how to replace a water filter on a particular refrigerator. The model shown is a Whirlpool/KitchenAid/Kenmore brand refrigerator that has the water filter at the bottom.
Whether or not you have this style of refrigerator or filter, manufacturers recommend replacing your water filter, at least, every six months. This will ensure that you are drinking clean, filtered water.
