GE Dishwasher Recall (released 05/16/07)
Mon, May 21, 2007
On May 16th, GE announced a voluntary recall of some of GE made dishwashers sold under various brands, such as GE, Sears Kenmore, and Hotpoint among others. The reason for this recall sounds very similar to the one given for the recent Maytag dishwasher recall.
Here are the details of this GE dishwasher recall:
General Electric Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.Name of product: GE Dishwashers
Units: About 2.5 million
Manufacturer: GE Consumer & Industrial, of Louisville, Ky.
Description: The recall includes GE built-in dishwashers sold under the following brand names: Eterna, GE, GE Profile™, GE Monogram®, Hotpoint®, and Sears-Kenmore. The dishwashers were sold in white, black, almond, bisque and stainless steel. The brand name is printed on the dishwasher’s front control panel. The following model and serial numbers can be found inside the dishwasher tub on the front left side of the dishwasher.
Hazard: Liquid rinse-aid can leak from its dispenser onto the dishwasher’s internal wiring which can cause an electrical short and overheating, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: GE has received 191 reports of overheated wiring including 56 reports of property damage. There were 12 reports of fires that escaped the dishwasher. Fire damage was limited to the dishwasher or the adjacent area. No injuries have been reported.

What do you think about GE’s remedy for this recall? Sounds a little better than Maytag’s $75 solution.

My dishwasher is one that is being recalled in GE’s latest dishwasher recall. I elected to have it fixed as it still worked perfectly fine. GE fedex’d the repair parts and they arrived the day before the service person was scheduled to come. They said that the service person would arrive
between 8am and 5pm on 5/23/07. At 5:30pm I called A&E Factory Service who was handling the service call and asked where the service person (Technician ID 0680074) was. Nice lady informed me that he had just logged out from his last call and was on his way. He arrived at our house shortly after 6pm. At 8:10pm he packed up all his gear, informed us that he replaced the parts but now the dishwasher did NOT work at all. We are now left with a non-running dishwasher (over a holiday weekend) that worked perfectly fine before the service person replaced the parts. Service person did call on 5/24/07 and told us that he
confirmed that GE sent the WRONG parts and service company or GE would be calling to set up another appointment and would send out, hopefully, the correct parts.

Hi J,
This is a pretty simple fix. I may be wrong, but it sounds like the A&E tech you had over may not be very competent. For one, it is a standard practice, not to mention common sense, to make sure that the appliance is in working order after performing the repair and before leaving the house. You may want to ask for a different tech to come back and finish the job.
Thanks for stopping by.

Today, 05-25-2007, I also called to arrange for recall service replacement of the questionable parts for our dishwasher. The Model Number is: GSD4030Z07WW. The Serial Number is: MZ830170B. I surely hope that a similar wrong part shipment to our home does not occur similar to what happened to J. Richardson on 05-23 and 24-2007. A service visit to our home is scheduled for June 1, 2007 between 8am and noon. Would you kindly make certain that the service replacement is done correctly the first time and completely on June 1st? Thank you. J.R.L.

John,
I understand your concern, however ApplianceJournal.com is an independent publication and we’re not affiliated with GE in any way. I would recommend making sure that the dishwasher is in working condition after the technician is done. If it is not, question the technician and see what he/she says.
Good luck. Thanks for stopping by. Don’t forget to keep us updated.

Update - I called GE today as I had not heard from anybody about fixing the dishwasher. I was bumped directly up to a manager in the service dept. when I told the first level cust. rep. what had happened. The service dept. guy was very apologetic and seemed quite embarrased about what had happened. He located a local service company (A&E is not even located in my state) and we set up an appt. while I was on the phone. New service person will be out next week to see if installation of replacement parts was done correctly. If it turns out parts were the wrong ones (GE mess-up) they will have to reorder and schedule another service call. The local service guy told the GE service manager (while I was on a conference call between all of us) that he has been called to fix many A&E Factory Service mishaps.
Still washing my dishes by hand…

Thanks for the update J.
Sounds like the local guy knows what he’s doing, so hopefully you’ll have your dishwasher back soon.
Keep us updated if you can.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend! (a good excuse to use paper plates this time

Doesn’t look like your Hotpoint model is part of the recall.

Daniel, close call. Your model is only one letter off. I would recommend calling GE (877-607-6395). The prefix of your serial number is on the list, by the way.
Ron, after taking a closer look at your Hotpoint model, I think it would be best for you to call GE as well.

Ron, while I can’t be certain, the rinse aid dispenser looks a lot like the one in models being recalled. I would try to get a hold of a manager at GE. GE’s main phone number is 1-800-626-2000. Expect to spend 30 minutes or more trying to get through to the right person.

AL + 200002 through 207337
DL + 200215 through 980416
FL + 202073 through 500677
GL + 000468 through 900468

Last night, I put food in my 2 year old GE Monogram range and set it to bake at 350 degrees. Next thing I heard was a tremendous bang and then a horrible sound that I just can’t explain. I looked at the oven and there was a fire inside. I turned it off immediately and the fire went out in the bottom left corner within a minute or so. There was a soot everywhere within the oven.
I called GE this morning and they informed me there is a $80 charge for a service call because I didn’t have the extended warranty. Fine, whatever!
A very nice gentleman came out to look at the oven. Turns out this is a common problem and he was not at all concerned that there was an explosion within the oven. He said it was some type of module that went bad and would cost $200 to replace. I just can’t help but think if this happened to someone when they were opening the oven door to checking to see if their food was fully cooked.
This post is strictly to inform people. I can’t believe these have not been recalled if this is such a “common” problem.
