THREE REASONS TO BUY A TRASH COMPACTOR

61064_82879896-log-cabin-kitchen.jpg  The environment has increasingly become a concern. On the home front, however, waste continues to grow. With waste piling up, it makes sense to consider ways of reducing it. A trash compactor is one answer to the problem. In fact, there are at least three reasons to buy a trash compactor.

A trash compactor operates on a simple principle - it takes household waste and presses it into a compact form. According to some experts, a trash compactor can reduce the size of waste by as much as 75 percent or from one-fourth to one-twelfth its original volume. In doing so, it allows a busy family or household to minimize the frequency with which they have to remove the trash. It, therefore, reduces overfilling garbage containers and decreases the amount of waste animals and humans can knock over and distribute everywhere. Decreased visits are also ideal for elderly or less mobile people.
Energy conscious people should also consider buying a trash compactor. They are low in electrical consumption. Some manufacturers, showing concern for the environment, have replaced the aerosol sprays which automatically spray when the trash compactor is operated, with alternative. They have installed charcoal-activated filters or deodorizers to reduce fluorocarbon emissions.
Other environmentally positive actions can occur, as an indirect result of the sorting process. These include recycling of glass as a result of the inability of trash compactors to handle all substances. Many manufacturers of trash compactors state not to place glass or glass products in a compactor. Both glass bottles and jars can shatter under the weight of the compactor, posing a possible hazard.  Aerosol cans may explode under pressure and table scraps or food would be lying around for an unseemly amount of time. Consequently, people become used to sorting their garbage and/or cutting down on the amount of specific types of waste.
Perhaps one of the significant reasons for buying a trash compactor is its combination of aesthetics and practicality. A trash compactor is compact. It also comes in two basic types: A free standing unit, or an under-the-counter type. As a result, it can be placed simply in an accessible but unobtrusive part of a room or be installed easily under a kitchen counter top - usually near the oven or any other direct power source.
With either choice, you are able to pick and choose from standard appliance colors, including stainless steel. If you are installing a trash compactor as an integral part of a cabinet or building it in as part of a wall unit, you can select various wood paneling to match your cabinet or units. Additional available features ensure safe handling and operation as well as convenience. A foot pedal allows you to open it when your hands are full while ant-jam device prevents possible accidents.
Trash reduction, environmentally friendly, aesthetic and practical – all are good reasons to buy a compactor - as is one more. A trash compactor should last about 10 years.  And that makes it a long term investment that adds up to the compacting of your budget as well.

For a reliable yet inexpensive compactor I’d recommend Broan. They make good compactors, although they haven’t upgraded their models in a while. If you prefer something that looks more modern, check out Whirlpool compactors.
