THREE IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SHOPPING FOR AN OVEN
Tue, May 1, 2007
Once, buying an oven was simple. There was little choice, but this has all changed. Now, you can spend hours walking up and down aisles in big box stores or warehouses and days going in and out of showrooms becoming overwhelmed by the wide variety. It only makes sense, therefore, to come up with a plan in advance containing at least three important things for your considerations.

The first item is size and area. Consider these questions. What space is available in which to place the oven? How much room does your current oven occupy? Is it built in or free standing? Do you plan to simply replace it? Whether you plan to replace it or move it, you have to know the exact measurements. This can include the width of your door. It has to come in somewhere. Make sure you have the dimensions written down. Take them with you as this will simplify one aspect of your decision.
Knowing how much area you want to fill permits you to decide whether you want a complete traditional range – i.e. one consisting of both an oven and stove top, or two separate entities a wall oven and a cooktop. If you are replacing only the oven, do you plan to relocate it? Is it built into a wall or does it occupy its own cabinet above or under the counter? Do these, too, need to be replaced or rebuilt?
The second consideration is the energy source: gas or electricity. Do you have plans to change over from one to another? Gas ovens are more energy efficient than electric models, but the cost may increase if you have to lay-in a pipe.
The third important criterion is convenience. What type of features do you want in an oven and how much are you willing to pay for them? Electronically enhanced or smart ovens now remove some problems associated with the modern life style. They can keep your food cool for you, turn themselves on in time to cook it and then, when it is done, keep it warm until your return. Smart ovens also can maintain an easily accessed recipe file. All this comes, of course, at a price.
There are other features more commonly asked for their smart technology. An escape from any need to do routine cleaning is always considered a positive option. Self-cleaning ovens are now offering different means of escaping this form of drudgery. There are models capable of letting you select the time for this action to be performed making it more convenient.
Within the oven, there are a variety of possibilities. The racks can now accommodate a wider selection of food sizing, taking advantage of the oven’s capacity. There are also large or small viewing windows and glass fronted doors permitting greater ability to blend in as part of a cabinet or wall.
If you stop and consider at least these three things, your oven shopping will go smoother than you ever thought possible.
